Featured Photographer: Mary Siani - Dogs and CrossFit
Art can be so much more meaningful when you know a little bit more about the person behind it - the eye behind the lens. That's why I periodically profile sports/action photographers and their work. Read on to learn about photographer Mary Siani and get a good look at the world through her eyes:
Professional photographer Mary Siani took one photography course and knew instantly it was her path to follow. She had previously explored other visual arts and mediums, but it was that class in 1999 that sealed the deal and had her pursue photography as her mode of expression. She bought her first digital camera in 2004 and hasn't stopped taking pictures since.
While our goal here at Breaking Muscle is to profile sports and action photographers, one of the things that struck me about Mary is that she loves to photograph dogs for the same reason she loves to photograph sports - the unfiltered emotions. And with those emotions, despite the fact photography involves only one frame of action, Mary wants to share a story with you. Said Mary, "I like seeing the emotions captured from the athlete and having someone react to that emotion when they see the photo."
As a photographer, Mary gravitated toward the sport of CrossFit because she, too, trained in CrossFit. She shared, "I really enjoy shooting all sports; however, I am partial to shooting CrossFit athletes. In part because I participate in CrossFit and can more closely relate to what the athlete is doing."
In the end, regardless of the photo content, it all comes back to emotion and story for Mary. "In both my sport and pet photography I want to capture a moment that tells a story and strikes an emotional chord," she said.
