Product Review: Techline's ProVision 6 Protein Powder Blend
If you’ve spent any time in just about any kind of gym, you’ve come across people discussing protein powder. It’s one of the most basic supplements you can use – mostly because it works. You need protein to build muscle and recover from your workouts. If you’re not getting enough in your diet, then protein powders are the way to go, especially if your schedule or your budget is tight.
So, how do you pick out the good protein powders from the copious number of junk protein powders out there?
Top on my list when I shop for protein powder is that it has a small number of ingredients and that those ingredients be of the highest quality possible. Recently I was told about a local company here in Portland with a great reputation for quality products.
Elite Athlete has been in the sports nutrition business for 27 years and was founded by three brothers – each of them world-class track athletes, so they know what a serious athlete needs. They produce their line of supplements under the brand name Techline and their protein powder, ProVision 6, is their number one selling product.
ProVision 6 Protein Powder is a protein blend so named because of the six different types of protein it contains. While other protein powders may debate which protein source is best, ProVision 6 combines them all to create a virtual time-release effect due to the different absorption rates of each protein.
Proteins included in ProVision 6:
- Whey Isolate
- Whey Concentrate
- Milk Isolate
- Egg Albumen
- Calcium Caseinate
- Micellar Casein
The theory behind the six proteins is that it creates a tier of proteins for the athlete – starting with the quick absorption of the whey protein and all the way out to the long digestion of the casein proteins. One of the purposes in taking a protein powder is to keep the nitrogen supplies in your body balanced – a long-lasting blend keeps that balance possible for longer windows of time, optimizing recovery and muscle building for the athlete.
Whey protein is absorbed quite quickly in the body and is traditionally used post-workout. On the other end of the spectrum is the micellar casein protein. Casein is a slow-digesting protein and might be one you take before bed or between meals.
One big plus for ProVision 6 is the high percentage of whey protein isolate in this blend – it is the number one ingredient. Many bargain brand powders will skimp on why protein isolate and use mainly the more affordable whey concentrate. Using whey isolate results in purer protein and less lactose, carbohydrate, and fat content.
Aside from the six proteins, the other ingredients in ProVision protein powder are natural and artificial flavorings, cellulose gum, lecithin, sodium chloride, and sucralose. Different flavors might also include cocoa or beet powder. While it doesn’t contain the more offensive aspartame, if you are trying to eliminate artificial sweeteners from your diet, then ProVision won’t be the protein powder for you.
I tried the powder with water, almond milk, and coconut water. It blended easily in all three. I sometimes took it by itself or I mixed in various supplements including fish oil. I sometimes took it post-workout and other times during the afternoons between meals.
I found the taste of ProVision 6 Vanilla to be quite palatable. It does not have an overly sweet or heavy taste and genuinely tasted like vanilla. It also blended well with other flavors, like my orange flavored fish oil. (I thought it tasted like an Orange Julius, my boyfriend thinks I’m crazy.) I experienced no stomach discomfort, which I credit to the product’s very low lactose content.
While ProVision 6 might not be the most organic and “clean” protein powder on the market it is definitely of high quality and keeps the ingredients to a minimum. It tastes good and is easily digested. I also find comfort in it being produced by a small company run by former athletes who stand by their product and take a modest approach to marketing. They let the product speak for them – and I think it does.
