3 Progressions for the L-Sit (Video)

The L-Sit belongs in every athlete’s alphabet of bodyweight exercises.



Welcome to our series featuring calisthenics expert Al Kavadlo. This week, Al teaches you how to stay stable in an L-Sit. A successful L-Sit requires the ability to exert constant tension, as well as flexibility and core strength. These are crucial qualities that will help you maintain health and vitality. Having such body control and suppleness will also be a great boon when performing the Olympic lifts.

Here are Al's recommendations for the L-Sit progression:

  1. First try to perform a bent-knee sit, which is exactly what it sounds like. Al recommends practicing on an elevated surface.
  2. To progress, try extending one leg at a time, and eventually both.
  3. When you are proficient in that, move to the ground and try to hold your L-Sit there.

Parallel bars are also an excellent location from which to perform an L-Sit.Make sure you maintain flexibilty, especially in your hamstrings, through frequent and appropriate stretching.Use this exercise often to help yourself build and maintain a strong, limber body!
