Andy McKenzie is an expert in bodyweight and core training. This week, he shows how you can train effectively without an expensive gym membership, using only a pair of broomsticks.

Here is Andy's minimal equipment routine:

  1. Bodyweight Rows (10 reps) - Place the sticks upright and grab them with your hands. Walk in between them and lower yourself down, face the ceiling, then pull yourself up. You get an extra challenge from working to keep the sticks from falling.
  2. Push Ups (20 reps) - Lay down one stick vertically and place the other on top of it horizontally. Then put your hands on the top stick and perform push ups with an added element of instability.
  3. Burpees (10 reps) - Everyone's favourite bodyweight exercise. No sticks required, but focus on jumping as high as possible every rep. You can eliminate the push up in favour of speed.
  4. Core Conditioner (1 rep) - Drive one stick into the ground at an angle. Grab it at the top, then slowly move your hands down and back up.

This is the essence of resourcefulness and commitment in training. Even without a gym, you can always find ways to make a great workout happen with the unlikeliest of equipment.
