EDITOR'S NOTE: Every Sunday we will be featuring a new bodyweight exercise video from physical therapist Ben Musholt, author of the Mad Skills Exercise Encyclopedia. Ben has a diverse movement background, spanning board sports, martial arts, parkour, and gymnastics. Get watching and get moving!

In this video, Ben Musholt demonstrates four alternative warm up exercises to the standard jumping jack or running in place motions. These movements are:

  • A split jumping jack, with legs forward and back rather than to side to side.
  • A karate skip, which helps to warm up the calves and open up the hips. Add in some kicks for extra spice.
  • A quadruped knee-to-face movement, which comes from the Brazilian martial art of Capoeira.
  • A squat kick, which comes from the Malaysian martial art of Silat.

Give these warm up alternatives a go before your workout and let us know how you get on!
