Substantial research is now being conducted to examine the health and medical benefits of practicing yoga, deep breathing, and meditation.  A new study published in the Indian Journal of Science and Technology  assessed the effects of a yoga program on lowering blood pressure.  Participants in the study were male blood pressure patients between the ages 30 to 50 years old.  Subjects participated in 45 minute daily sessions of yoga and breathing exercises.

Measures for systolic and diastolic blood pressures were taken and researchers found that the experimental group had notably reduced measurements of blood pressure.  The reduction of blood pressure was thought to be achieved by the yoga and breathing techniques.  The combination of relaxation, breathing, and stretching the musculature of the body worked to calm the nervous system and lower blood pressure.  Researchers suggested that yoga should be recommended to lower blood pressure and improve health and wellness.
