In terms of accomplishments and influence on the sport of strongman, few athletes could compare to the exploits of Brian Shaw and Eddie Hall. Both are former World’s Strongest Man (WSM) champions, both plan to continue to plug away in various strength endeavors as competitors, and both seem to have no long-term desire to rack their circus dumbbells any time soon. A recent training collaboration between the pair might be a tacit acknowledgment they’re aware of their impact on strength sports overall.

On Nov. 13, 2022, Hall posted a video on his YouTube channel where he and Shaw ran through a challenging shoulder workout together. Hall traveled from his native United Kingdom to join Shaw for the session at the latter’s home gym in Fort Lupton, CO.

Here’s an overview of the shoulder workout Shaw and Hall tag-teamed together at Shaw’s home gym.

Seated Overhead Press

Shaw and Hall began their shoulder routine with a few sets of a seated overhead press. The athletes did not use traditional dumbbells, instead electing to utilize Rogue Thompson Fatbells — which resemble bowling balls with a handle in the hollowed-out center. The pair began with a weight of 53 pounds in each hand on the first set before gradually transitioning to a final set of 150 pounds per hand.

Given that Fatbells require the athlete to put their hands “inside” the weights, so to speak, some might consider them more challenging to train with. This sentiment appeared to apply to Hall after his first experience with the implements.

“Gotta say, never touched them [the Thompson Fatbells] before,” Hall said. “We did five sets, but I feel like we did ten sets. It’s that much harder to stabilize.”

Seated Machine Shoulder Press

Staying seated, Shaw and Hall next performed some sets on a seated machine shoulder press. The athletes began with just one 45-pound plate on each end of the machine and worked to a final set of 450 pounds for 10 reps (five 45-pound plates on each side).

Cable Rear Delt Flye/Single-Arm Dumbbell Lateral Raise Superset

Once they were finished with pressing movements and variations, Hall and Shaw closed their shoulder workout with demanding supersets, pairing a rear-facing shoulder flye in a cable crossover machine with single-arm dumbbell lateral raises. Once the two reached the final set, Shaw ensured he performed at least one more rep (13) than his friendly peer in Hall (12).

Having formally stepped away from strongman after a victory in the 2018 Britain’s Strongest Man (BSM), Hall will return to the sport at the 2022 Giants Live World Nation on Nov. 26, 2022. Hall will be the captain of Team UK, opposing Robert Oberst’s Team USA, in the contest that will take place in Liverpool, England.

Meanwhile, Shaw hasn’t outlined any upcoming competitive plans at the time of this writing. The legendary strongman appears to be focused on bolstering his own YouTube channel with noteworthy strongman content — along with other usual media appearances — first and foremost for now.

One thing does seem certain as Shaw and Hall once again go their separate ways — when these two have a strength meeting of the minds, a lot of weight will be flying around.

It might be impossible to have familiarity with strongman as a sport and not know the exploits of the Stoltman brothers. Among their individual achievements, Tom Stoltman is the two-time defending World’s Strongest Man (WSM) champion (2021-2022), while his older brother Luke won the 2021 Europe’s Strongest Man (ESM). In a shift from their usual task of lifting hefty objects, the two brothers decided to train in a different kind of athleticism.

On Oct. 5, 2022, the Stoltmans uploaded a video to their joint YouTube channel where Tom and Luke take cues about how to swim from extreme adventurer and ultra-marathon swimmer Ross Edgley. Edgley is notably the first known person in history to swim around Great Britain’s length of 1,780 miles (2,864 kilometers). The trio decided to conduct the swimming lesson in an undisclosed portion of the North Sea somewhere in the United Kingdom.

Given that temperatures in the North Sea are a “little chilly” for swimming in early October — roughly 54 degrees Fahrenheit (12 degrees Celsius) — it might have been safe to assume the group would outfit themselves in heating gear.

Instead, the Stoltmans elect to jump into the water while wearing just swim trunks with swim goggles for their vision. Once they’re in the water, Edgley relays his personal process for swimming, especially when he’s in the middle of an ultra-marathon.

Edgley details something he calls the “catch-up stroke,” where one arm doesn’t make its own individual stroke through the water until it “catches up” with the other arm. The objective behind the technique seems to be about efficiency and saving energy while in the water, given the apparent shorter strokes.

For the Stoltmans, two elite strongmen who each weigh 350-plus pounds, this technique is a means of “slowing down” their strong arms to focus their power and channel it into a quality swim.

The group seemingly puts Edgley’s technique into successful practice as the camera pans over them swimming through a current in the North Sea. To close their day, the Stoltmans and Edgley spend some time relaxing in the sauna and a small cold pool.

After their short foray into autumn swimming lessons in the North Sea, the Stoltmans have a stocked strongman slate ahead of them.

Even after swimming with an extreme adventurer, the grinding strongman mentality seemingly never stops for these two elite competitors.

In preparation for his return to strongman, Hall shared an August 24 video on his YouTube channel that details his daily nutrition three months before he competes in Liverpool.

Here’s Hall breaking down how he eats as he trains to excel in strongman again.

Breakfast

According to Hall, his wife usually prepares his daily meals. On the day this video was filmed, she had to work, so Hall made everything himself — with the help of his wife’s written instructions.

First on the ledger for Hall was a morning protein shake. It consisted of two scoops of whey protein, two tablespoons of peanut butter, one banana, some Skinny Food chocolate spread, milk, and ice. The strongman guessed the shake had around 700 calories and 65 grams of protein.

Afterward, before walking his dog for some morning cardio, Hall weighed himself on a scale. The scale read 160.45 kilograms (353.7 pounds) — more than 40 pounds above Hall’s weight during his boxing match with Björnsson in late March this year.

Lunch

Before he headed out for a training session, Hall pieced together his lunch. The athlete used scissors to cut up several chicken thighs into a skillet. Then, he chopped up onions and tomatoes and mixed them with coriander, cilantro, and his own special low-sugar cooking sauce. He packed this mix into five wraps, which had roughly 1,500 calories and 80 grams of protein.

To have a smaller meal after his workout, Hall filled up two additional wraps. His daily total after training was 2,800 calories and 305 grams of protein.

Dinner

To conclude his day, Hall made two “Beast Burgers.” These burgers had two big patties of beef on respective buns, sauce, tomatoes, and cheese.

Everything went smoothly except for strips of bacon which were burnt beyond salvage, and a large side of fries — which Hall failed to pat dry, toss in oil, and plop in the air fryer. After he consulted his wife on the telephone, he acquiesced and plated his non-crispy potato wedges.

After finishing this final monster of a meal, Hall said his total calories for the day were 4,600, and total protein was 385 grams.

In his strongman heyday, Hall competed at over 400 pounds during contests. That is a far cry from his current weight of 353.7 pounds. Such a potential shift might mean Hall excels more on agility-related events while sacrificing strength in heavier aspects at the 2022 WSN.

Hall will take his nutrition and training to captain Team UK at the 2022 Giants Live World’s Strongest Nation on November 26 in Liverpool, England.
