On Sept. 29, 2022, Browner captured a 500-kilogram (1,102-pound) raw traditional deadlift during a training session. He is the fourth known person to deadlift at least that much weight while on film. The 110-kilogram athlete used a sumo stance and overhand grip and wore a lifting belt and lifting straps to help with the historic pull.

The historic nature of Browner’s deadlift naturally drew the attention of more than a few figures in strength sports. Browner received notable variations of praise from people like two-time International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) World Champion (2019, 2021) Russell Orhii, powerlifters Bobb Matthews and Ernie Lillibridge Jr., 2016 Europe’s Strongest Man (ESM) Laurence Shahlaei, and strongman Rob Kearney.

Browner’s deadlift also puts him in an exclusive club in strength sports. He joins three athletes who have pulled at least 500 kilograms on camera over the last several years.

The 2017 World’s Strongest Man (WSM) champion Eddie Hall was the first to deadlift at least that much weight when he set the mark as the strongman World Record at the 2016 World Deadlift Championships (WDC) in Leeds, England.

Roughly a year later, 2018 WSM winner Hafthor Björnsson extended the record when he deadlifted 501 kilograms (1,104.5 pounds) during the 2020 World’s Ultimate Strongman “Feats of Strength” series. However, because Hall accomplished his deadlift at a sanctioned neutral competition while Björnsson did his at his personal gym in Reykjavik, Iceland, members of the strongman world still believe Hall holds the official World Record.

A few years later, in late April 2022, Polish athlete Krzysztof Wierzbicki became the first powerlifter ever to deadlift at least 500 kilograms when he pulled 502.5 kilograms (1,108 pounds) during a recorded training session. At the time of this writing, Wierzbicki’s deadlift is the heaviest-filmed known pull in history. Unlike Hall and Björnsson, Wierzbicki notched his pull without a deadlift suit. Because Wierzbicki used straps, it wouldn’t have counted in a sanctioned contest.

Browner follows Hall, Björnsson, and Wierzbicki as the fourth person to complete a traditional deadlift of at least 500 kilograms from the floor. He joins the Wierzbicki as the second person to do without the assistance of a suit. Likewise, Browner’s pull would not count in an official competition because of his use of straps.

Aside from breaking the World Record, the next significant deadlift achievement might be to see who can pull 500 kilograms without the use of straps. Browner, Wierzbicki, and their peer Danny Grigsby — the first powerlifter to capture a 1,000-plus pound raw deadlift in a full power meet — will undoubtedly all be huge factors in that race.

Wierzbicki notched the all-time pull from a sumo stance while wearing wrist straps. He also may have been wearing a lifting belt under his shirt, but that is undisclosed for now.

At the time of writing, Wierzbick’s weight for the all-time accomplishment is unknown. If recent history is any indication, he might have weighed at or around 110 kilograms — his competition weight since Spring 2021, per Open Powerlifting.

Notably, since Wierzbicki’s momentous deadlift didn’t occur in a formal competition, it is not an official record. Nevertheless, it is the heaviest-ever deadlift from the floor and worthy of his evident jubilation upon completing the pull.

Wierzbicki’s Feat in Context

With this pull, Wierzbicki has gained entry into the legendary 500-kilogram (1,102.3-pound) deadlift club. There are only two other members — the 2017 World’s Strongest Man (WSM) Champion Eddie Hall and the 2018 WSM Champion Hafthor Björnsson.

Hall was the first to capture the achievement with a 500-kilogram (1,102.3-pound) pull during the 2016 World Deadlift Championships (WDC). Björnsson then surpassed his rival by a single kilogram at the 2020 World’s Ultimate Strongman “Feats of Strength Series.”

Notably, aside from the formal competition difference, there are other vital distinctions between Wierzbicki’s historic pull and that of his 500-kilogram predecessors. The powerlifter Wierzbicki completed his deadlift from a sumo stance — which isn’t legal during strongman competitions. In addition, the Polish athlete just used wrist straps. Björnsson and Hall wore wrist straps and deadlift suits for their pulls.

With Wierzbicki’s record taken into account, here’s a shortlist of the heaviest deadlifts of all time:

Heaviest Recorded Deadlifts in History

Krzysztof Wierzbicki (Poland) — 502.5 kilograms (1,107 pounds) | Unofficial Record

Hafthor Björnsson (Iceland) — 501 kilograms (1,104.5 pounds) | All-time World Record

Eddie Hall (United Kingdom) — 500 kilograms (1,102.3 pounds)

Danny Grigsby (United States) — 465 kilograms (1,025.2 pounds) | Full Power Meet Record

Benedikt Magnússon (Iceland) — 465 kilograms (1,025.2 pounds) | Deadlift-only Meet

Whether Wierzbicki is capable of eclipsing Björnsson and Hall on their strongman, conventional, fully equipped terms is unclear. However, when it comes to powerlifting, it’s apparent he has the capacity to surpass his contemporary in Grigsby — who also used a sumo stance, but no wrist straps — on his full power meet record mark set in late March 2022.

Whenever Wierzbicki does compete in a meet next, expect the greater strength sports community to be on watch for a potential new deadlift record.

Wierzbicki did not disclose how much he weighed when he completed the lift. According to Open Powerlifting, he has competed professionally in the 110-kilogram weight class since the spring of 2021. In any event, this deadlift was well over four and a half times Wierzbicki’s recent usual competition body weight.

Paving a Road

Wierzbicki has been open on social media in his pursuit of a hallowed mark in strength sports — the 500-kilogram deadlift (1,102 pounds). The only two people to ever deadlift that much weight are 2017 World’s Strongest Man Champion (WSM) Eddie Hall and 2018 WSM Champion Hafthor Björnsson. Notably, both achieved their legendary pulls from a conventional stance while wearing deadlift suits and lifting straps — which is allowed in a strongman competition.

Given his quick progress of late, Wierzbicki’s entry into the 500-kilogram deadlift club seems inevitable.

During the 2020 National Association of Powerlifting (NAP) Siberian Championships, while competing in the 100-kilogram weight class, Wierzbicki logged the current all-time world record deadlift — a staggering 433.5-kilogram pull (955.7-pound). Roughly eight months later, in November 2020, while wearing wrist straps and a lifting belt, the Polish athlete deadlifted 456 kilograms (1,005.3 pounds) in training, breaking the 1,000-pound barrier for the first time.

The ensuing year, in early November 2021 while competing in the 110-kilogram weight class, Wierzbicki broke the all-time world record for a non-full power meet with a 447.5-kilogram pull (986.6-pound) during the 2021 WRPF-POL Mistrzostwa Polski.

Finally, in what is increasingly becoming a typical deadlift step up for Wierzbicki, he recently pulled 461 kilograms (1,016 pounds) during another workout.

All four of Wierzbicki’s mentioned pulls were from a sumo stance. His latest 490-kilogram deadlift (1,080 pounds) training feat is another massive step toward that lofty 500-kilogram (1,102-pound) goal.

Back and Forth

The 110-kilogram powerlifting weight class appears to have a two-person deadlift tug of war for the record books. While Wierzbicki continues to charge along toward astonishing, seldom-seen numbers, American powerlifter Jamal Browner has generally kept up with the meteoric pace.

Over the approximate past month, Browner has seen rapid advancements in his conventional deadlift. On March 23, 2022, he pulled 432.5 kilograms (953.5 pounds) while wearing only a lifting belt. An approximate month later, on April 20, 2022, Browner locked out 409.6 kilograms (903 pounds) for two reps.

In the 110-kilogram weight class, Browner also possesses an all-time deadlift world record — a 440.4-kilogram pull (971-pound) from the 2020 World Raw Powerlifting Federation (WRPF) Hybrid Showdown II. Notably, like Wierzbicki, Browner has also previously crossed the 1,000-pound barrier with a 476.3-kilogram deadlift (1,050-pound) during a training session in July 2020. Browner wore a lifting belt and lifting straps for that pull.

While the 500-kilogram mark is still a ways off, the deadlift world record for strictly powerlifters is within shouting distance for Wierzbicki and Browner. The 2003-2004 Iceland’s Strongest Man Champion (ISM) Benedikt Magnùsson holds the current record with a 460.4-kilogram pull (1,015-pound) captured at the deadlift-only 2011 Hardcore Clash of the Titans IV. Magnùsson competed in the super heavyweight class (319+ pounds; unrestricted weight).

Wierzbicki still has to make progress with his conventional deadlift (at least in public), but whenever he decides to compete again, he might beat Browner to the punch and break Magnùsson’s record. Membership to the 500-kilogram club likely won’t follow long after. Talk about killing two significant strength-sports birds with one stone.

Polish Power

With over a decade’s worth of experience, Wierzbicki is no stranger to the professional powerlifting community. He’s been a regular fixture and headliner in the Polish powerlifting scene and has seldom fallen short in making his presence known in international competitions. To date, Wierzbicki has captured 24 individual victories. Perhaps most notably, that includes four wins in the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) World Classic Powerlifting Championships (2013-2014, 2015, 2017).

Wierzbicki is a well-rounded strength-sports athlete, but the deadlift might be most responsible for his reputation. In particular, he’s in possession of one official and unofficial deadlift record.

During the 2020 National Alliance of Powerlifters (NAP) Siberian Championship, while competing in the 100-kilogram weight class, Wierzbicki successfully pulled the current 433.5-kilogram (955.7-pound) raw deadlift record. The next year, during the 2021 WRPF-POL Mistrzostwa Polski, he locked out what would be a record in most circumstances with a 447.5-kilogram deadlift (986.6 pounds) while competing in the 110-kilogram weight class.

However, because that latter pull happened at a deadlift-only meet, Wierzbicki did not get the official mark. The distinction still belongs to Jamal Browner, who pulled 440.5 kilograms (971.1 pounds) at the 2020 World Raw Powerlifting Federation (WRPF) Hybrid Showdown II — a full power meet.

Wierzbicki’s stellar deadlift has seen a gradual, quality progression. In 2017, he first exceeded a then-IPF world record when he pulled a 420-kilogram deadlift (926 pounds) while competing in the 120-kilogram weight class. Roughly a half-year later, he pulled his unofficial world record again in training, but for three reps.

By the end of the year 2020, Wierzbicki pulled 456 kilograms (1,005 pounds) during training, breaking the 1,000-pound barrier for the first time. He wouldn’t have the nickname “Mr. Deadlift” without a corresponding and appropriate list of achievements to back that billing up.

The Road to 500 Kilograms

Should Wierzbicki eventually notch the unique, rare mark of a 500-kilogram deadlift (1,102 pounds), he’ll join some exclusive company.

Only two human beings have ever deadlifted at least that much weight — 2017 WSM Champion Eddie Hall and 2018 WSM Champion Hafthor Björnsson. Both accomplished their remarkable deadlifts while wearing lifting straps and deadlift suits, and using conventional stances.

Notably, Hall and Björnsson achieved their marks when they were 28 and 29-years-old, respectively. As a result, Wierzbicki could soon claim the distinct honor of being the first person in their 30s and the oldest to pull 500 kilograms.

The Polish athlete is still 39 kilograms (86 pounds) away from the hallowed mark, but that number seemingly gets smaller by the day. Provided he continues his recent pace, it might only be a matter of time before he joins a legendary deadlift club.
