										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On July 25, 2023, powerlifter <a data-lasso-id="299580" href="https://breakingmuscle.com/mary-duffy-deadlift-300-pounds-trap-bar-raw/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mary Duffy</a> shared an Instagram video of herself <strong>finishing off a two-minute wall sit</strong>. The 56-kilogram athlete wrote that the she had <strong>97.5 kilograms (215 pounds) worth of <a data-lasso-id="299581" href="https://breakingmuscle.com/best-bumper-plates/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">weight plates</a> on her lap</strong> while sitting against the wall in the clip. Based on the tenor of Duffy&#8217;s post and her recent tidbits on social media, this wall sit appeared to be her way of ringing in a recent 74th birthday. For any <a data-lasso-id="299582" href="https://breakingmuscle.com/how-to-build-strength/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">strength</a> sports athlete, this would be quite the individual fitness showcase, regardless of the time. </p>



<p>Given that the video captures Duffy in the final seconds of her two-minute sit, it doesn&#8217;t seem like the athlete struggled much performing her weighted wall sit. If anything, it seemed to be an excellent demonstration of the balance, core, and leg strength Duffy has cultivated during her consistent training. For the athlete to do it after 74 revolutions around the sun could be seen as even more impressive. </p>

<p>This wall sit is not the first time Duffy has made headlines for her gym proficiency as a septuagenarian. </p>



<p>In late July 2022, Duffy finished a <a href="https://breakingmuscle.com/trap-bar-deadlift" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-lasso-id="300419">trap bar deadlift</a> with 113.4 kilograms (250 pounds) loaded on the bar and an additional 50 pounds of chains adorned to the sides. The weight was 2.4 times Duffy&#8217;s usual powerlifting competition body weight of around 56 kilograms. Roughly a year later, in late May 2023, Duffy built on that <a href="https://breakingmuscle.com/deadlift/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-lasso-id="300420">deadlift</a> when she pulled <a data-lasso-id="299588" href="https://breakingmuscle.com/73-year-old-mary-duffy-deadlift-chains-310-pounds/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">140.6 kilograms (310 pounds) raw with chains</a> while utilizing a traditional <a data-lasso-id="299589" href="https://breakingmuscle.com/best-barbell/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">barbell</a> from a <a data-lasso-id="299590" href="https://breakingmuscle.com/deadlift-vs-sumo-deadlift/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">conventional stance</a>. That massive feat was nearly triple her usual competitive weight class.</p>



<p>Now Duffy can add a demonstration of core and leg power to her ever-growing catalog of achievements in the gym. </p>



<p>As for Duffy&#8217;s resume with a sanctioned competitive context, the now Amateur Masters 70-74 athlete has lost just once in her eight-year string of contests. As a five-time International Powerlifting Association (IPA) Connecticut State Powerlifting champion (2015-2017, 2019, 2022), such a record is nothing to sneeze at for an athlete who began lifting in her mid-60s.  </p>

<p>Duffy has already established herself as a tornado of strength. It&#8217;s likely only a matter of time before she pulls off another notable gym milestone that will be evergreen regardless of age. </p>

<p>Duffy wore a <a data-lasso-id="253451" href="https://breakingmuscle.com/5-mistakes-you-might-be-making-with-your-weightlifting-belt/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lifting belt</a> to help her with the massive pulling feat and completed it from a <a data-lasso-id="253452" href="https://breakingmuscle.com/deadlift-vs-sumo-deadlift/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">conventional deadlift stance</a> while utilizing a mixed grip. This chain deadlift is nearly three-times Duffy&#8217;s most recent competition body weight of 52.2 kilograms (115 pounds).</p>

<p>Duffy has been competing as a powerlifter since her mid-60s when the athlete made her sanctioned lifting debut at the 2015 International Powerlifting Association (IPA) Connecticut Ironman Push/Pull Showdown. In the years since, the now Amateur Masters 70-74 athlete has maintained a mostly sterling competitive record, <strong>losing just once over the length of her career</strong>. </p>



<p>However, Duffy might have true headlines and rose to prominence in 2022 when she crushed a 136-kilogram (300-pound) raw <a href="https://breakingmuscle.com/trap-bar-deadlift/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-lasso-id="253460">trap bar deadlift</a> with chains. The feat was 2.4 times Duffy&#8217;s usual competition body weight, and she has now built on it accordingly with a more traditional pulling position and implementation. </p>



<p>After achieving that trap bar deadlift in the summer, Duffy would go on to come in first place with wraps in the 57-kilogram weight class as an Amateur Masters 70-74 competitor during the 2022 IPA Connecticut State Powerlifting Championships in the fall. The victory gave Duffy her fifth title with wraps in six appearances in the contest (2015-2017, 2019, 2022). What&#8217;s clear is the athlete might have her own powerlifting dynasty on hand in &#8220;The Constitution State.&#8221;</p>

<p>These days, as might usually be the case for Duffy, she&#8217;s keeping busy with her strength training, at least according to the occasional tidbit shared over her Instagram page. At the time of this article&#8217;s publication, Duffy hasn&#8217;t announced any immediate plans to compete any time soon and it&#8217;s unclear when she&#8217;ll step on an official platform again. If her commitment to fitness greatness says anything, though, it should only be a matter of time for this older but still powerful athlete. </p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Mary Duffy has tried her hand at competitive powerlifting for over seven years. A recent <a href="https://breakingmuscle.com/how-to-build-strength/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-lasso-id="126825">strength</a> accomplishment shows that the 73-year-old powerlifter might only be getting better as time goes on.&nbsp;</p>
<p>On July 27, 2022, Duffy posted a clip to her Instagram profile where she <strong><a href="https://breakingmuscle.com/deadlift/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-lasso-id="126826">deadlifted</a> 113.4 kilograms (250 pounds) raw</strong> with a <strong>trap bar that had 22.7 kilograms (50 pounds) in chains</strong> attached. Per <em>Open Powerlifting</em>, Duffy has only competed in the 56-kilogram weight class since the start of her career in April 2015. With that in mind, her deadlift <a href="https://breakingmuscle.com/emom-training/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-lasso-id="126813">training</a> feat — where she wore a <a href="https://breakingmuscle.com/5-mistakes-you-might-be-making-with-your-weightlifting-belt/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-lasso-id="126814">lifting belt</a> and lifting straps — is 2.4 times her usual recent competition body weight.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 id="duffy-at-a-glance">Duffy at a Glance&nbsp;</h2>
<p>Notably, Duffy&#8217;s recent <a href="https://breakingmuscle.com/trap-bar-deadlift/" data-lasso-id="157341">trap bar deadlift</a> is not the first instance where the powerlifter deadlifted around that weight. Approximately a month before this mark, in early July 2022, Duffy completed a raw deadlift of 111.1 kilograms (245 pounds) off weight plates while using a <a href="https://breakingmuscle.com/7-steps-to-barbell-etiquette/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-lasso-id="126816">traditional barbell</a> and <a href="https://breakingmuscle.com/jamal-browner-953-pound-conventional-deadlift/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-lasso-id="126817">sumo stance</a>.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Duffy made her competitive powerlifting debut at the 2015 International Powerlifting Association (IPA) Connecticut Ironman Push/Pull Showdown. She came in first place during that contest. At the time of this writing, she has 11 sanctioned meets to her name and has only<strong> failed to finish in first place once in one age category</strong>. That result came during the 2016 IPA Connecticut State Championships, where she captured second place in the Amateur Open Division. (Note: Duffy has often competed in multiple age categories at each of her contests.)</p>
<p>According to <i>Open Powerlifting</i>, Duffy has competed in the Masters 70-74 raw age category since November 2019. In the 56-kilogram division, some of her notable achievements include the Raw bench press World Record of 57.5 kilograms (126.8 pounds), and the third heaviest totals in the Raw and Raw With Wraps categories (235 and 249.5 kilograms, respectively).</p>

<h2 id="duffys-future">Duffy&#8217;s Future&nbsp;</h2>
<p>Per Duffy&#8217;s Instagram, she recently battled a case of COVID-19 in early June 2022.</p>
<p>Since then, Duffy has been capturing various noteworthy training figures. Shortly after her recovery, the powerlifter finished a 113.4-kilogram (250-pound) deadlift off weight plates. Then, in late June 2022, Duffy successfully notched a 102-kilogram (225-pound) raw <a href="https://breakingmuscle.com/back-squat/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-lasso-id="126819">back squat</a> (with 15 extra pounds in band weight). A general glance of her social media would show that Duffy makes it a point to share similar training marks with regularity.&nbsp;</p>
<p>At the time of this writing, Duffy has not confirmed any plans for her next sanctioned powerlifting competition. However, whenever Duffy does compete next, it seems she&#8217;ll be ready to finish another stellar performance.&nbsp;</p>
