According to Burger’s Instagram profile and the official results, the massive Silver Dollar deadlift is a Texas State record for an 18-inch deadlift in the under-275-kilogram weight class. Burger wore knee sleeves, a lifting belt, and utilized lifting straps to help him with this deadlift.

Given the ease with which Burger seemingly completes his pull, the athlete could vault himself up the Silver Dollar deadlift annals soon enough. That’s because his achievement compares well with his peers. If Burger had competed and managed his pull during the recent 2022 World Deadlift Council (WDC) World Silver Dollar Championships, his 1,100-pound milestone would’ve ranked fifth among all his peers. Ben Thompson set a then-World Record of 577.2 kilograms (1,272.5 pounds) during the contest in a first-place performance.

Notably, the Silver Dollar record has changed several times in the 2022 calendar year.

Thompson’s record from mid-May 2022 eclipsed Sean Hayes’ former record mark, who pulled 560 kilograms (1,235-pound) Silver dollar deadlift during the 2022 Strongman Corporation Canada King & Queen Of The Throne contest. Hayes had previously surpassed Anthony Pernice’s past figure of 550 kilograms (1,212 pounds) from the 2020 USS Farm Strong Record Breaker. Estonian Strongman Rauno Heinla captured the current World Record with a pull of 579.7 kilograms (1,278 pounds) at the 2022 Silver Dollar Deadlift Estonian Championship in early June.

Burger has a long way to go before he can start challenging the new record. However, given the context, he seems to be on the right track.

Though he competes on a domestic level, at the time of this writing, Burger does not appear to possess any significant international competitive strongman experience. A general perusal of Burger’s social media showcases the athlete performing and training various traditional strongman staples like the Log Press and Atlas Stones.

When he’s not preparing for strongman competition, Burger spends much of his time working as a certified personal trainer. The athlete appears to run his own independent business entitled “Camp Gladiator,” where he offers coaching centered around a prospective person’s nutrition and fitness. According to his Instagram bio, Burger characterizes his personal training as a means to “help normal people with health and fitness.”

The Silver Dollar deadlift yet again has a new top dog. On May 1, 2022, Ben Thompson pulled a 557.2-kilogram (1,272.5-pound) Silver Dollar deadlift during the 2022 World Deadlift Council (WDC) World Silver Dollar Championships in Paisley, Scotland. Thompson’s figure was enough to notch the overall victory and the new all-time Silver Dollar deadlift world record. A Silver Dollar deadlift is a partial deadlift where the barbell stands on top of 18-inch platforms.

Given that this was an online-only competition, Thompson shared his result with footage of the feat a week in advance before the final deadline. The World Deadlift Council (WDC) tabulated the final results — with Thompson on top — on Sunday, May 8, 2022.

“We have to wait until next Sunday for results but I think with a number like this, you can guess how defending the title of ‘silver dollar deadlift world champion’ went.”

Thompson’s elite Silver Dollar mark surpasses the previous top number by 17.2 kilograms (37.9 pounds). He tops Sean Hayes, who pulled 560 kilograms (1,235 pounds) during the 2022 Strongman Corporation Canada King & Queen Of The Throne in early April 2022. Hayes exceeded that weight by a tenth of a kilogram during the WDC competition, but it ultimately did not hold thanks to Thompson’s lofty strength achievement.

Both Thompson and Hayes wore lifting belts and wrist wraps for their respective pulls. However, Hayes was barefoot, while Thompson wore a deadlift suit and was in his socks. He also used an overhand grip. The two did not share their body weights for the respective pulls.

Note: Thompson listed his pull as 1,270 pounds while the WDC qualified it as 1,275.2 pounds.

Breaking the Silver Dollar deadlift world record aligns with Thompson’s previous expectations. The competitor entered the 2022 WSDC as the defending champion, likely knowing he’d have to blow by any of his previous stats to have a chance even to repeat.

With no other recorded professional competitions, Thompson appears to focus on his work with the Silver Dollar deadlift exclusively. His Instagram is rife with videos of him training the movement from the movement’s usual 18-inch platforms on a consistent basis.

It certainly seems that ambition has paid off. The Canadian athlete can now stand as a reigning two-time Silver Dollar Champion and is the sole owner of the overall Silver Dollar world record.

While the Silver Dollar deadlift shares similarities with its close, more traditional cousin, its distinction is clear. Whereas an athlete performs a regular deadlift with a straight barbell (or trap bar), a Silver Dollar deadlift is a partial deadlift — an athlete moves the weight starting from 18 inches off the floor.

The modern nickname for the Silver Dollar deadlift comes from its presentation. Athletes often stack and encase weight plates attached to both ends of a barbell, giving the lift a unique appearance. It becomes a partial deadlift because of its starting position that has the boxes elevating the attached barbell.

According to Strongman.org, the Silver Dollar deadlift has deep, differentiating origins. Historic competitors once lifted crates full of actual silver dollars at the ends of their barbells. Over the years, top athletes have strived for identical records and marks, but some deployed different weight variations.

For example, when strongman Tom Magee held the 535-kilogram (1,187.4 pounds) record for over three decades (1983-2017), he filled his crates with bricks. When Pernice set the previous record of 539.7 kilograms (1,189.8 pounds), he encased regular weight plates in his boxes. Notably, using weight plates was also Hayes’ setup for his Silver Dollar deadlift.

Hayes is a relative newcomer to the professional strongman scene. Per Strongman Archives, the Canadian-born athlete has competed in two events to date. Here are his results from the respective competitions:

2021 Official Strongman Games — Seventh place

2021 Canada’s Strongest Man — Third place

Hayes wrote that he tried to extend the world record further in his Instagram post. The strongman had a third Silver Dollar attempt to utilize and was ambitious by shooting for a 589.6-kilogram pull (1,300 pounds). He didn’t complete the lift.

Alas, despite the miss, Hayes managed to set himself apart. His record lift drew praise from perhaps the greatest strongman ever, Žydrūnas “Big Z” Savickas. Roughly a week after the lift, Hayes shared a recorded Cameo video message for him, sent by Savickas. The strongman legend seemed impressed and told Hayes, “For the future, I wish you more world records.”
