Challenge Yourself: Relaxation Breathing For Rest Days
In my yoga classes, I can’t tell you how often I hear people say, “Is today’s class going to be hard?” Often I respond with, “It’s all a matter of perspective.” What I really mean is that sometimes relaxing, meditating, or resting can be far harder than pushing your limits, at least for me.
We live in a society that praises multitasking, taking on as many projects as you can (and then some), and crossing off the to-do list as quickly as possible. I battle this constantly in my own life. I can get so caught up in the day’s tasks that I forget to appreciate the small moments.
Taking time to slow down, quiet the mind, and breathe deeply is something we should all strive to pencil into our day just as much as the responsibilities we cannot escape from. And it should be an essential part of our training just as much as all the hard work and heavy lifting we do. I read a quotation once that basically said, “Anything that you plug in if it breaks, unplug it for a few minutes and 90% of the time it works again. We are the same way.”

In this short video, we will work on a breathing practice called nadi shodana that allows us to “unplug.” Also sometimes called “alternate nostril breathing,” this technique works on balancing the masculine and feminine, or solar and lunar energies, in our bodies. It will help bring focus and balance into your mental body.
This breath practice can also be used if you are struggling to fall asleep or wake up. This practice can be done daily, right before an important event, and/or during high-anxiety time. So, if you're stressing out before a competition or timed workout, this can help you find focus.
