Mattie Rogers will not be denied when it comes to setting new bars of weightlifting excellence.

On July 28, 2022, during the 2022 Pan-American Championships in Bogotá, Colombia, Rogers’ combination of overhead strength and leg power was displayed again. During the contest, the 76-kilogram weightlifter captured a 141-kilogram (310.8-pound) clean & jerk to set a new Senior American Record. The mark surpasses Rogers’ previous record from the 2022 USA Weightlifting (USAW) National Championships Week by one kilogram (2.2 pounds).

Thanks to that new record clean & jerk figure, a 111-kilogram (244.7-pound) top snatch, and a 252-kilogram (555.5 pounds) total — Rogers took home three gold medals in the 76-kilogram division. It’s the American athlete’s second Pan-American title in three years (2020, 2022).

Check out a video of Rogers’ American Record clean & jerk from her Instagram profile:

Notably, between Junior and Senior competitions, Rogers’ victory means the weightlifter has now stood on the Pan-American podium for nine straight years.

Here’s a top stat rundown of Rogers’ complete performance at the 2022 Pan-American Championships:

Mattie Rogers (76KG) | 2022 Pan-American Championships Top Stats

Snatch — 111 kilograms

Clean & Jerk — 141 kilograms | Senior American Record

Total — 252 kilograms

Rogers’ total is her best ever from an international competition. It’s just three kilograms (6.6 pounds) of her National best from the 2021 USAW Weightlifting National Championships. Rogers unsuccessfully attempted a 114-kilogram (251.3-pound) snatch, which would’ve given her a new personal record (PR). Current 76-kilogram Olympic Champion Neisi Dajomes owns the Pan-American snatch record of 118 kilograms (260.1 pounds).

In Rogers’ Instagram post, she reflected on what went into her latest achievement. She also looked ahead to coming potential challenges in her future.

“Definitely not exactly according to plan today, but a valuable experience to prep for Worlds this year, also in Bogotá [Colombia],” Rogers writes. “I worked out the kinks (i.e., maybe let’s not lose three kilograms upon arrival again, or I don’t know … remember how to clean without a WWE smackdown choke holding myself). I’m ready to keep this upward trend moving. Time to bid a sad, sad farewell to the 76-kilogram weight class once again and start our Olympic qualification in the 81-kilogram class.”

A Seamless Transition

As Rogers alludes, the weightlifter will likely shift to the 81-kilogram division at the upcoming 2022 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships. That contest will also occur in Bogotá, Colombia, sometime in December 2022. At the time of this writing, the IWF organization has not announced a definite date for the contest.

Rogers’ shift in weight class is necessary for her long-term ambitions because the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will not include the 76-kilogram division in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Rogers will attempt to successfully qualify for her second straight Olympic Games in the coming years. (Note: Rogers finished sixth in the 87-kilogram weight class in her first Olympics during Tokyo 2020.)

Rogers, 26, has moved around divisions at intermittent points throughout her career. She has experience in the 81-kilogram division, as she won her first Senior Pan-American Championship in 2020 in that division. The American athlete also took home gold in the 81-kilogram weight class at the 2021 USAW Weightlifting National Championships.

With the 2022 Worlds acting as a significant initial step in qualifying for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris — Rogers and other American athletes will have to feature in the division they plan on competing in France. Whether Rogers can translate that same success in the 81-kilogram division to future contests remains to be seen. Given her past high-level precedent, it wouldn’t be an unlikely development.

Hampton Morris is one of the more prominent up-and-coming names in Olympic weightlifting. Amidst the absence of other notable stars, the athlete came through for Team USA at the 2022 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Pan-American Championships in Bogotá, Colombia.

On July 24, 2022, during the IWF contest in Colombia, Morris scored a 162-kilogram (357.1-pound) clean & jerk. The figure is a new Junior World Record for the 61-kilogram weight class. Per Team USA Weightlifting, Morris surpassed his own previous competition best of 161 kilograms (354.9 pounds) from the 2022 USA Weightlifting (USAW) National Championships in Las Vegas in early July. The new top clean & jerk figure in an international competition helped Morris win the 61-kilogram division overall en route to a gold medal and his second Pan-American title (2020).

A Decorated Profile

Morris might be only 18 years old, but he’s amassed quite the weightlifting resume. With Morris’ second Pan-American title, the athlete now has six victories in international contests dating back to the Pan-American Youth Championships in August 2019. He possesses just one finish out of first place in that time frame — a second-place result at the 2021 Junior Pan-American Games in Cali and Valle, Colombia.

Here’s a rundown of Morris’ recent stellar output in sanctioned international weightlifting contests, per the IWF directory:

2019 Pan-American Youth Championships — First place

2022 Junior World Championships — First place

2022 Pan-American Championships — First place

Morris’ new Junior World Record clean & jerk is a major step up from his last appearance at the Pan-American Championships. In 2021, the weightlifter completed a 151-kilogram (332.9-pound) clean & jerk on the way to a gold medal. That means Morris has improved that number by 11 kilograms (24.2 pounds).

Morris’ upcoming schedule as a weightlifter should stay busy. Team USA Weightlifting has stated that performances in the 2022 Pan-American Championships would significantly influence who the Americans pick to represent them at the 2022 IWF World Championships. That competition will also take place in Bogotá, Colombia sometime this December. (At the time of this article’s publication, the IWF has not confirmed a concrete date.)

At the time of this writing, Morris is on the 17-person roster for that competition, including noteworthy names like reigning Women’s 76-kilogram National Champion Mattie Rogers. Should Morris perform well at the IWF Worlds, he might be in contention for his first-ever appearance in the Olympics in Paris 2024.

At his pace, that might just be one of many eye-opening milestones in due time.

On July 21, 2022, weightlifter Kate Vibert announced that she had torn a meniscus during a training session in an Instagram post. Meniscuses are pieces of cartilage in people’s knees that function as shock absorbers between the shin and thighbone and help stabilize knees. The athlete did not disclose how her injury happened, which meniscus she tore, or what lift she performed. She only said that she knew something was wrong immediately after a rep.

That feel when you know you have to tell your coach you’re 99 percent sure you just tore your meniscus. (Spoiler alert: I was correct.)

As a result of her injury, Vibert says she will forgo competing in the 2022 Pan-American Championships, which will take place on July 24-July 29 in Bogotá, Colombia.

Vibert is one of Team USA weightlifting’s biggest stars. With a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games and a couple of American Records on the snatch (112 kilograms/246.9 pounds) and total (248 kilograms/546.7 pounds) in the 71-kilogram division — Vibert usually submits a stellar performance of strength for the Americans. Unfortunately, she’ll have to sit on the sideline for some time as she recovers from her knee injury.

Expected Recovery

In the caption of her Instagram post, Vibert didn’t seem too concerned about any lasting, negative effects of her meniscus injury. After a pending surgery, she appears ready to move forward as fast as possible.

“Awaiting a partial meniscectomy surgery sometime in the next week or two, I got about a 50 percent removal from the looks of it,” Vibert wrote. “Obviously, I’ll have to sit out from PanAms, but all things considered, I am confident I’ll be back to lifting in the next month or two. It was a scary few days navigating options, but I’m happy with my decision and excited to get back in the gym and recover as soon as possible.”

Based on a December 2016 study, Vibert’s total recovery from her meniscus tear could vary in time. In said study, the mean recovery period for the approximately 500 meniscus patients was around five weeks. Complete healing with no underlying issues usually took about three months. (1)

Unless otherwise noted, these patients were not world-class weightlifters like Vibert. The severity and degrees of tears also play a factor. That doesn’t necessarily mean Vibert will recover faster from her reported 50 percent meniscus tear, but it might offer a leg up given her established high-level conditioning.

Vibert’s Future

Depending on how her recovery from her meniscus tear and surgery goes, Vibert’s absence from the competitive weightlifting scene might not last long. A contest that could line up with Vibert’s timeline is the 2022 International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships.

The exact date for that competition isn’t confirmed but will occur this fall in Bogotá, Colombia. At the time of this writing, the IWF calendar has the World Championships slated for December 1-17, 2022. Notably, Vibert hasn’t participated in this contest since a gold medal result in the 71-kilogram division during the 2019 edition.

Vibert may also elect to focus on her recovery entirely while retaining aspects like her leg and shoulder strength. The athlete has centered her long-term ambitions on the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Those are still roughly two years away, but qualifications will begin to ramp up soon. Notably, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) electing not to include Vibert’s recent 76-kilogram weight class at these Olympics, she has said over social media that she’d compete at her past division of 71 kilograms.

There’s a long road ahead for one of the United States’ top weightlifters. Given Vibert’s track record, she’s likely preparing for the long haul.
