Let’s just say last year didn’t go as expected for Evan “T-Rex” Singleton.

Considered one of the front-runners for the 2022 Giants Live World Tour Finals, the former professional wrestler suffered a significant setback in September 2022 when he tore his right distal biceps tendon during a training session. The injury not only knocked Singleton out of competing in a contest in which he finished third overall in 2021, but it also prevented him from making his first appearance at the Rogue Invitational.

However, more than a year removed from undergoing surgery to reattach his biceps tendon, Singleton has proven he’s still a force to be reckoned with by adding two titles to his strongman resume over the last few months. Coming off victories at the 2023 Giants Live Strongman Classic and the 2023 Giants Live World Open, the Pennsylvania native has plenty of confidence about his chances of winning the 2023 Rogue Invitational, which will take place from Oct. 27-29 in Round Rock, Texas.

As part of their “Road To The Invitational” series, Rogue Fitness spotlighted Singleton’s comeback campaign in a video posted on their YouTube channel on Oct. 18, 2023.

After making it clear that he wants to be the World’s Strongest Man and win the upcoming Rogue Invitational, Singleton left no doubt about his desire to become the face of the sport he’s competed in since 2018.

“I want the average, casual viewer to think of strongman and picture me,” he said emphatically. “That’s what I want.”

Singleton, who stands 6-feet, 6 inches tall and weighs about 351 pounds (159 kilograms), played “every sport at least once” growing up. Although he didn’t shift his focus to strongman until a serious head injury forced him to retire from pro wrestling, he credited his diverse athletic background with giving him the skills that have helped him become a standout in the strength sports world.

And despite having to call it quits on his WWE dream, Singleton learned some valuable lessons that have carried over to his current line of work.

“A lot of my mentality, my attitude, my aggression, I got all of that from wrestling,” he explained. “There is something that drives me to be better than what I was yesterday and to be better than my competition, to be stronger than anything that I run into.”

Fully healed from the injury that left him unable to compete in 2022, Singleton showcased his impressive upper body strength by practicing the Fingal’s Fingers and Log Press. Both movements require strong shoulders, triceps, and core. Supersetting the movements in succession also challenges competitors’ cardiovascular conditioning.

Singleton sounded quite optimistic about his chances of winning that event at the Invitational, as he believes his cardio and ability to lift the Fingal’s Fingers and heavy log should put him in an advantageous position.

On the other hand, the humble competitor highlighted that he needs to work on his clean technique to prepare for the Axle Press — an exercise he hasn’t worked on in over two years.

“I’m going to really fine-tune and really work on the clean so that it’s efficient, it’s precise, and it’s accurate every single rep so I can conserve as much energy for the press,” Singleton explained. “If I get it to my shoulders, it’s going up.”

Singleton admitted that the movement “felt hard” during his training session. However, he was only 50 pounds (22.7 kilograms) away from the expected competition weight, which means he may still have a shot at taking home top honors in the event.

“I am coming in the most complete and the hungriest that I’ve ever been in my life,” Singleton said. “I am pushing as hard as I can to give everything that I can on competition day, and there isn’t anybody that’s going to stop me.”

Overall, the 31-year-old seems mentally and physically prepared to do some serious damage at Dell Diamond later this month. With a pair of recent wins under his belt and an opportunity to secure at least one more before 2023 comes to a close, don’t underestimate T-Rex’s chances of leaving the Lone Star State as the Rogue Invitational’s strongman champion.

On Aug. 11, 2023, Singleton posted a training video on his YouTube channel, which featured him performing a standing overhead press with 204 kilograms (450 pounds). You can see the entire video below, with the big lift coming at the 3:49 mark.

Singleton removed the barbell from the rack and took three small steps to prepare himself. He pushed the bar up, but it came back down quickly after rising only halfway. He immediately regrouped and pushed again, and the second time it went up all the way to lockout. He lowered the weight to shoulder level and re-racked the bar. He wore wrist wraps, elbow sleeves, and a weightlifting belt for the lift.

In the moments after, Singleton said that he may have rushed the first attempt because his entire body wasn’t tight. Once he regrouped and set himself, the bar went up, and he expressed confidence about his chances at the contest.

“Going into the Shaw Classic with a 450 (pounds) out of the rack, I’m happy, confident, and yeah, and ending out of the rack on a really good note.”

He then finished the workout with seated machine presses, reverse pec-deck flyes, single-arm cable lateral raises, and triceps pushdowns. Full sets and reps weren’t shown of those exercises.

Singleton goes into the 2023 Shaw Classic with a lot of momentum thanks to his victory at the 2023 Giants Live Strongman Classic on July 8. He advanced to the 2023 World’s Strongest Man final before that, finishing that contest in a career-best fifth place. He competed in the 2022 and 2021 editions of the Shaw Classic as well. He was eighth out of 15 men in the 2022 Shaw Classic and fifth out of 16 in 2021. Trey Mitchell won both contests.

The 2023 Shaw Classic has a lot of history riding on it. Aside from promoter Brian Shaw reporting it to be his final contest as an athlete, the contest winner will now earn the title of “Strongest Man on Earth” thanks to Shaw purchasing the rights from original owner and Fortissimus strongman contest promoter Paul Ohl.

On July 25, 2023, strongman Evan Singleton shared a video of himself capturing a 612-kilogram (1,350-pound) leg press for 12 reps during a recent training session.
Given that Singleton is a prominent fixture on the 2023 Shaw Classic (SC) roster, such developments could be excellent news for an athlete looking to notch another win and earn the title of “The Strongest Man on Earth.” The Car Leg Press is one of the 2023 SC’s main events and will be for max reps.
With his 2023 preparation in the account, Singleton has enjoyed a resurgence of late. A biceps injury in late 2022 forced Singleton to withdraw from the remainder of the strongman competitive calendar as he recuperated and regained his strength post-surgery. In recent weeks, he’s seemingly back to top form.

The American athlete is fresh off a victory at the 2023 Giants Live Strongman Classic (GLSC), notably overcoming two World’s Strongest Man (WSM) champions in Mitchell Hooper (2023) and Tom Stoltman (2021-2022) en route to the title. Perhaps more notably, Singleton even beat Trey Mitchell (fourth place), who is the reigning two-time SC champion (2021-2022). Before the GLSC, Singleton finished in fifth during the 2023 WSM, roughly just six months after his biceps ailment.

Here’s an overview of the 2023 SC roster as Singleton pushes for another victory:

Here’s a rundown of the 2023 SC events schedule:

2023 Shaw Classic Events

Log Medley

Max Hummer Tire Deadlift

Wheelbarrow and Arm-Over-Arm Medley

Bag Toss

Car Leg Press

Atlas Stones

Fingal’s Fingers and Power Stairs Medley

If Singleton can thrive in a high-pressure situation coming off a recent injury, and if he can topple titans like Mitchell, Hooper, and Stoltman in another setting, then logic would posit that he could potentially transfer over such a performance to his next contest in the 2023 SC.

Singleton has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the professional strongman sphere. With another sterling performance or even victory at the 2023 SC, he could become the sport’s next hot commodity.

The athlete emerged triumphant in the contest that took place on July 8, 2023, in London, England. After undergoing biceps surgery in September 2022, the 2023 GLSC win is Singleton’s first since the 2021 Arnold Strongman Classic UK (ASCUK) in October 2021 — an approximate two-year gap. Singleton has never finished off the podium in three career appearances at the GLSC (2021-2023).

Joining Singleton on the 2023 GLSC podium were former two-time World’s Strongest Man (WSM) champion (2021-2022) Tom Stoltman (second place) and the reigning WSM king Mitchell Hooper (third place). Per his page on Strongman Archives, Stoltman has now finished as the runner-up in two of three competitive appearances in 2023. Meanwhile, after his 2022 WSM debut, Hooper has finished on the podium in 10 consecutive competitions. The 2023 GLSC was technically Hooper’s “worst” result after winning three straight contests — the 2023 Australia’s Strongest International (ASI), the 2023 Arnold Strongman Classic (ASC), and the 2023 WSM — to start the year.

The 2023 GLSC featured five events: the Nicol Stone Carry, Super Yoke, Deadlift (for reps), Viking Press, and Castle Stones (an Atlas Stones variation). Here are the final standings and respective points for each participating strongman competitor from the 2023 GLSC:

Evan Singleton (United States) — 47 points

Tom Stoltman (United Kingdom) — 46.5 points

Mitchell Hooper (Canada) — 43 points

Trey Mitchell (United States) — 33.5 points

Singleton won his first-ever GLSC with consistency. The athlete finished in at least the top three of each event, peaking with a runner-up performance on the Super Yoke and the Castle Stones while tying for second place in the Viking Press.

Here’s an overview of Singleton’s individual performance that led to his win:

Evan Singleton | 2023 Giants Live Strongman Classic Event Overview

Nicol Stone Carry (for distance) — 25.25 meters | Third place

Super Yoke (for time) — 12.19 seconds | Second place

Deadlift (for reps) — Five | Third place

Viking Press (for reps) — 17 | Tied for second place

Castle Stones (for time) — Five in 25.18 seconds | Second place

The most surprising aspect of Singleton’s win might have been his output on the Castle Stones. Aside from Stoltman, Singelton was the only other athlete to lift all five Stones, culminating in a narrow 0.5-point margin of victory over his peer.

In a post on his Instagram from the aftermath of the 2023 GLSC, Singleton appeared emotional and appreciative of his achievement. When factoring in the recent adversity concerning his biceps injury that knocked him out of the final leg of 2022, such a reaction seems more than warranted.

Based on the tenor of Singleton’s post, his win could even be seen as a statement.

“No other way to say it,” Singleton started. “I wanted this [a win in the 2023 GLSC] so damn bad. I put everything into this prep and managed to pull out the victory. This win meant alot to me because it’s a good example of why when you talk about the best in the world, you don’t leave me out of the conversation. I had a point to prove this competition and I made my statement. I am one of the best.”

Tom Evans — Winner of the 2022 Shaw Classic Open and 2022 Arnold Amateur Strongman World Championships

Six of these American athletes recently came together for a powerful WSM training session about a week before the biggest contest in strongman. Evans was noticeably absent, likely due to his last-minute addition to the WSM roster as a replacement for the injured Pavlo Nakonechnyy. On Apr. 11, 2023, Shaw posted a video on his YouTube channel chronicling the group’s time together.

The six American athletes performed five movements that somewhat mirror events expected at the 2023 WSM.

They began the day by loading sandbags and a weighted keg onto a platform. The weights and distance weren’t revealed. While it was impossible to recreate its exact format in advance, this was in reference to the Loading Race from the Qualifying Stage of the competition.

“Definitely a good start with these guys. All of us are primed and ready for World’s Strongest Man. But this is the tune-up and, at the end of the day, iron really does sharpen iron,” Shaw said after completing the first training medley. “So it’s why I wanted to have these guys out and in the gym with me heading in. My goal is for them to push me, me to push them, and all of our levels to go up. Collectively, that’s what’s going to happen.”

They then shifted to a log ladder with five implements that featured gradually increasing weight. Only Singleton and Faires failed to lift all five logs. The Log Ladder will be the final event of the first day of the 2023 WSM.

Next, the group threw in some heavy overhead dumbbell work and a single Fingal’s Finger. Unlike the start of the session, no one amongst the American group of competitors is guaranteed to perform these events at the WSM, as they comprise different portions of the two-day Final.

To close their day together, the six took to the Conan’s Wheel, where the athlete’s task is to carry around a heavy implement in a circular, fixed motion as far as possible. The Conan’s Wheel will likely be a climactic moment for some WSM competitors as it starts the second day of Qualifying.

Here is an overview of the complete 2023 WSM event schedule:

Of the seven American competitors, it would stand to reason that Shaw and his championship pedigree may likely fare the best of the bunch at the 2023 WSM. Someone like Mitchell, with his two consecutive SC victories, could also be a dark horse. Mitchell’s best-ever WSM placing was in 10th at the 2021 iteration.

This isn’t to say that Singleton, Faires, Thompson, and Remick won’t thrive. Just because there are presumed favorites, doesn’t mean another American stud can’t come out of the blue to level a talented field.

After Evan “T-Rex” Singleton ran through a string of strongmen contests in 2022 — including a podium result at the 2022 Giants Live Strongman Classic — he ran into a rather unfortunate roadblock. In late September 2022, the athlete tore his right distal biceps tendon while training. The injury not only led him to withdraw from the 2022 Giants Live World Tour Finals, it also saw him end his 2022 competitive season after undergoing surgery. A little more than two months later, it’s almost as if he never missed a beat.

On Dec. 8, 2022, Singleton posted a clip of himself completing a 185-kilogram (407.8-pound) log lift during a recent workout. According to Strongman Archives, the log lift is more than Singleton’s all-time competition best of 181 kilograms (399 pounds) from the 2021 Shaw Classic. Given the required overhead strength needed to finish off the feat — it might be one the biggest indicators that the athlete’s health and fitness are rounding back into form post-injury. Note: The athlete denotes that his log lift amounts to 410 pounds in his post, but that may have likely been a typo.

(NSFW language in the post caption below)

Upon successfully locking out his lift, the emotion on Singleton’s face and in his body language was palpable. He exclaims in joy the moment he holds the heavy log above his head and explodes with enthusiasm as soon as he drops it to rest on two tires on the floor. A powerful reflection in his post tells the story of a frustrated athlete pushing hard to return to an elite level of competition as soon as possible.

“I hope all you guys lived it up in 2022 because the easy ride is [expletive] over,” Singleton wrote. “2023, I’m back, I’m stronger, I’m faster, my head is right, and I’m hungry. Everything I missed out on this year, I’m making up for tenfold in 2023. It’s going to be the scariest version of the T-Rex yet, and not a single one of you is ready for it. I’m back, and I’m hungry and really pissed off.”

This log lift isn’t the first time Singleton has stepped into the gym since tearing his biceps tendon. The athlete has been sharing clips of his general training progress post-surgery since a 317-kilogram (699-pound) safety bar box squat for five reps in mid-October 2022. That specific leg movement, however, didn’t need Singleton to significantly involve his upper body and, in turn, biceps.

Judging by his social media, the first instance of Singleton more directly training his arms again came with a 100-pound seated dumbbell press for 25 reps on Halloween Weekend 2022. Though, he only worked his uninjured left arm. In early November 2022, Singleton would perform his first post-surgery yoke carry of 390 kilograms (859.8 pounds) for 50 feet in 6.8 seconds. Finally, just over a week later, Singleton “tested the waters” with his right arm and performed a successful strict press of 102 kilograms (225 pounds) for 12 reps.

When Singleton does return to formal strongman competition in 2023, it appears he’ll be more than ready to shine. The athlete has previously disclosed that the 2023 World’s Strongest Man contest in late May will be his “first stop” before he jumps back into the Giants Live circuit over the ensuing summer. From there, all bets might be off for an athlete evidently undeterred by what now seems like only a minor setback.

In a post on his Instagram page, Melsted expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete at the 2022 Rogue Invitational.

“I can’t wait to do the hard stuff and lift heavy things amongst the strongest of the strongest in one of the biggest competitions out there,” wrote Melsted. “See you all in Austin, Texas, in a few weeks.”

Melsted, 28, has participated in 16 strongman competitions in his professional career. To date, his top highlights might be back-to-back victories in the 2020 and 2021 Strongest Man in Iceland contests. Here’s a short rundown of his noteworthy results:

Before his surgery, in one of his apparent last heavy lifting sessions for a while, Singleton shared a Sept. 25 Instagram clip of himself powering through some heavy box squats. The athlete completed a 340-kilogram (751-pound) set for three reps.

“The last time I’ll be lifting heavy for a while, so might as well make it good,” Singleton wrote of his box squat workout. “Definitely ran on pure anger and hate today. I didn’t really realize how upset I was until the weights got heavier and heavier. The more weight there was, it was almost like it was just pulling the emotion to the surface. I’m going to be getting real friendly with squats again after surgery.”

Singleton would subsequently upload a Sept. 28, 2022, video to his YouTube channel focusing on his deadlift. Because he couldn’t apply any pressure to his right arm, the strongman wore a protective body strap. He would capture a 385.6-kilogram (850-pound) pull for his best one-rep. After finishing deadlifting, Singleton trained his left arm with lateral raises, dumbbell biceps curls, and cable curls.

Event Breakdown

Novikov completed his Strongman Classic repeat thanks to a performance where he won three of the five events. He only finished outside of the top three once. Here’s a short recap and the results from each of the contest’s individual events:

Dumbbell Medley

In the first event of the Strongman Classic, the 12 athletes had the task of lifting five circus dumbbells ranging from 80 to 120 kilograms (176.3 to 264.5 pounds) to an approved overhead lockout position. Whoever could lift the five dumbbells in the fastest time would be the victor.

With a time of 38.38 seconds, Novikov beat second-place finisher Rob Kearney (42.21 seconds) by roughly three seconds. Hooper could only lift four dumbbells in 31.46 seconds, but his effort was enough for a third-place result.

Oleksii Novikov — Five in 38.38 seconds

Rob Kearney — Five in 42.21 seconds

Mitchell Hooper — Four in 31.46 seconds

Paul Smith — Four in 43.36 seconds

Gavin Bilton — Four in 46.27 seconds

Spenser Remick — Four in 52.70 seconds

Maxime Boudreault — Four in 69.81 seconds

Ken McClelland — Three in 59.3 seconds

Evan Singleton — Two in 13.13 seconds

Eddie Williams — Two in 18.10 seconds

Mark Felix — One in 8.06 seconds

Andy Black — One in 15.08 seconds

Black suffered an undisclosed injury during this event and withdrew from the rest of the contest.

Hercules Hold

The Hercules Hold was a challenge all about grip strength. During this event, the athletes had to hold a 160-kilogram (352.7-pound) pillar in each of their hands for as long as possible with their arms stretched wide while maintaining their grip.

Late contest addition Eddie Williams captured the first-place upset when he held the pillars up for 72 seconds. Paul Smith (67.1 seconds) and Mitchell Hooper (64.65 seconds) rounded out the top three. The Hercules Hold was the only event where Novikov did not notch at least a top-three result.

Eddie Williams — 72.01 seconds

Paul Smith — 67.1 seconds

Mitchell Hooper — 64.65 seconds

Evan Singleton — 64.04 seconds

Oleksii Novikov — 58.11 seconds

Mark Felix — 53.59 seconds

Gavin Bilton — 52.34 seconds

Spencer Remick — 52.16 seconds

Maxime Boudreault — 50.21 seconds

Ken McClelland — 47.53 seconds

Rob Kearney — 35.95 seconds

Notably, Mark Felix holds the Hercules Hold World Record of 83.62 seconds from the 2019 Giants Live Wembley. On this occasion, he finished outside the top five.

Farmer’s Walk

The third event of the contest saw the strongmen carry two 150-kilogram (330-pound) implements for max distance with a one-minute time limit. The winner would be who could cover the longest distance within that time frame. Novikov (63.3 meters) managed to hold off another promising late addition in Maxime Boudreault (60 meters) to win the Farmer’s Walk. Paul Smith (58 meters) wasn’t far behind his peers in third.

Oleksii Novikov — 63.3 meters

Maxime Boudreault — 60 meters

Paul Smith — 58 meters

Evan Singleton — 55.5 meters

Eddie Williams — 53.25 meters

Mark Felix — 52.35 meters

Spenser Remick — 44.15 meters

Ken McClelland — 41.4 meters

Mitchell Hooper — 29.6 meters

Rob Kearney — 20.5 meters

Gavin Bilton — 15 meters

Axle Deadlift for Reps

As the competition started to close, Novikov began to separate himself from the other athletes. In this event — where the competitors had to axle deadlift 360 kilograms (793.8 pounds) for as many reps as possible in a minute — Novikov was the only person to finish seven reps. Hooper (six reps) and Felix (five) were the next to flank behind Novikov’s dominant first-place outing.

Oleksii Novikov — Seven reps

Mitchell Hooper — Six reps

Mark Felix — Five reps

Evan Singleton — Four reps

Spenser Remick — Four reps

Paul Smith — One rep

Eddie Williams — One rep

Ken McClelland — One rep

Atlas Stones

As is typical in strongman, the famed Atlas Stones were the finisher to this year’s Strongman Classic. The person who could lift all five stones ranging from 120 to 200 kilograms (264 to 440 pounds) into their podiums in the fastest time would be the winner. Boudreault hit the Stones hard, lifting the five stones in 24.03 seconds. Singleton came in second with five stones in 25.59 seconds. In third place, Novikov (25.6 seconds) finished behind Singleton by one-hundredth of a second.

Maxime Boudreault — Five in 24.03 seconds

Evan Singleton — Five in 25.59 seconds

Oleksii Novikov — Five in 25.6 seconds

Gavin Bilton — Five in 27.23 seconds

Eddie Williams — Five in 34.31 seconds

Mitchell Hooper — Five in 35.58 seconds

Spenser Remick — Five in 51.24 seconds

Rob Kearney — Four in 23.21 seconds

Ken McClelland — Four in 23.94 seconds

Paul Smith — Four in 31.78 seconds

Mark Felix — Three in 24.56 seconds

Even still, Novikov’s Stones result was enough to cement his repeat Strongman Classic title.
