With a resume that features four Mr. Olympia titles (2006-2007, 2009-2010), bodybuilding legend Jay Cutler is well-equipped to offer comprehensive fitness advice. One of Cutler’s signature traits — which he still diligently keeps up with in retirement — was his large arms. Given that he doesn’t pose on stage anymore, these days, Cutler is more about sharing his training secrets rather than keeping them to himself.

On June 27, 2023, Cutler shared a video to his YouTube channel where he ran through a high-volume arm workout. Based on how he chose to title the video, the routine is helping the former champion build an impressive pair of 20-inch arms. Usually, such a claim might be hyperbolic. Coming from Cutler, the goal is entirely believable and worth diving more into.

Here’s an overview of Cutler’s workout, which features nine different exercises to address both the triceps and biceps. Note: The precise working and warm-up weights for each movement were not disclosed. The same holds true for the exact number of repetitions on occasion.

Jay Cutler | “20-Inch Arm” Workout

Straight-bar triceps pushdown: Two warm-up sets, three working sets (increase weight each set)

Kneeling rope pressdown: 3-4 x 10-12

Overhead dumbbell extension: Three sets

Seated dip machine: Three sets (increase weight each set)

Two-arm dumbbell kickback: 3 x 10-12

Nautilus biceps curl machine: Three sets

Alternate dumbbell curl: 3 x 8-10

Barbell spider curl: 3 x 10-12

Machine preacher curl: Three sets

Some of the more notable tidbits featured in this video include Cutler revealing that his current body weight was 243 pounds. When discussing some of his closing exercises, Cutler said he wants to weigh at least 250 pounds within two months of the video’s filming. The icon explained he’s been doing two-a-day cardio sessions as part of his ongoing “Fit for 50” transformation. These additional workouts, including a 25-minute session the morning of the arm workout with a bike session planned for later that same evening, seemingly haven’t hampered his mass-gaining progress.

Cutler maintained that he chose to do an arm workout on camera after noticing the preference of his fans and social media channel subscribers. For someone nearing 50 years old, the legend’s ease in this arm workout made it seem as if he had a lot left in the tank on a competitive level. However, this fit luminary has said he will not be returning to the stage any time soon.

With no plans to compete again in the near future, Cutler is free to build his fitness-influencing empire and simultaneously leave the ladder behind for those who want to make a climb up. For Jay Cutler, four-time Mr. Olympia champion (2006-2007, 2009-2010), the bodybuilding legend likes seeing what some of the fittest people on the planet are brewing.

On June 23, 2023, in one of the latest episodes of his podcast, Cutler broke down where he believes the current Men’s Open division stands before the onset of the 2023 Olympia this early November. To say the least, in a conversation with his manager Matthew M. Daniels, the icon maintained he has his eyes on a few familiar names and didn’t mince words about potential upstarts.

While Cutler didn’t offer specific thoughts on every prime Mr. Olympia competitor — Nick Walker was mentioned in passing but not expanded upon — he did mostly touch every corner of the elite bodybuilders of the Men’s Open class. Here are some of Cutler’s thoughts on what’s sure to be a loaded Mr. Olympia stage in Orlando, FL:

Michal “Križo” Križánek

Cutler was impressed by Michal Križánek’s recent progress but still felt he hadn’t closed the gap enough on the other athletes.

“He [Križánek] was looking so paper thin, especially in the upper body,” Cutler said. “The arms are some of the best in the business, and it’s looked like he made improvements, which, I think he did improve from his prior showings. But I don’t know if he came down in size a little bit to gather the condition. I still feel like he’s still going to have trouble pushing the top spots at the [2023] Olympia.”

Derek Lunsford and Samson Dauda

To some, after his runner-up Mr. Olympia finish in 2022, Derek Lunsford is the next heir-apparent superstar in bodybuilding. Cutler seems to be one of those people. However, after a recent mutual training session, Cutler ensured he talked up 2023 Arnold Classic (AC) winner Samson Dauda as a possible Olympia champion in his own right.

“We just saw Derek [Lunsford] and Samson [Dauda], too,” Cutler said. “They trained together a couple days ago and Derek looks tremendous, which he always has, and Samson looks tremendous, which he has for the past few years. Obviously, he’s the Arnold [Classic] winner. The question is if Derek would’ve done the Arnold [Classic], and we could keep talking about that.”

Hadi Choopan and Brandon Curry

Cutler believes that two established titans, Hadi Choopan and Brandon Curry, have somewhat been overlooked in the popular conversation. That might be a mistake for the defending Olympia champion (Choopan) and the 2019 victor (Curry).

“Contention-wise, Hadi’s [Choopan] been kind of shouting out ‘don’t forget about me,'” Cutler explained. “We’re also forgetting Brandon Curry.”

Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay

After falling short of a “three-peat” in his Olympia title defense, there have been rumblings that Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay could take a break from bodybuilding to recharge. The Egyptian dynamo has quelled these conversations, maintaining that he’s training “angry” for Olympia redemption in the fall. Cutler believes this is the right mentality to have because:

Elssbiay doesn’t have time to waste as he nears the age of 40 and

Cutler thinks that Elssbiay, at his best, can still win the Olympia.

“Ramy [Elssbiay] sounds like he’s going to come back and compete, which I’m all for,” Cutler said ” … The point is he [Elssbiay] just needs to regroup and do what he does best and come in the best of his ability. There’s no real timeline on that. He’s 38, he can’t take a few years off. I hear his health is really great. I hear his training is really great. He’s had some atrophy compared to years prior on the arms, triceps, I think he’s admitted to having some downsizing there. But he looked great at the [2023] Arnold [Classic].”

Chinedu Obiekea aka “Andrew Jacked” and Hunter Labrada

Andrew Jacked finished on the podium at the 2023 AC and has already mapped out ambitious summer competitive plans as a way to qualify for the 2023 Olympia. Meanwhile, Hunter Labrada is in hot pursuit of his own Olympia redemption with a streamlined training plan.

Cutler said he liked the duo’s talent but colored his commentary as if he still needed to see more from both athletes.

“I hear great things about Andrew [Jacked], too,” Cutler stated. “The big showdown is going to be Texas [the 2023 Texas Pro]. There’s going to be other guys, too. I know there’s a lot of international shows, but that’s going to be, like, who’s not going to qualify there [in Texas]. Those two guys [Andrew Jacked and Hunter Labrada] need to be in the [Olympia] lineup because they’re people we’re talking about. The question is, can Andrew come and win the [2023] Olympia and shock the world?”

More than most years, the 2023 Mr. Olympia is starting to resemble a relentless gauntlet from which only a true champion of champions will come out victorious. If an icon like Cutler professes so, such a competitive reality feels inevitable.

Cutler reported in the caption of the post that he weighed 239.5 pounds at the time of the photo. The 49-year-old bodybuilding icon appears quite lean, displaying a lot of quality muscle for an athlete who has not been on a competitive stage since the 2013 Mr. Olympia contest when he placed sixth overall. Check out Cutler’s “before” photo below:

Cutler’s intention is to endure a physique transformation culminating on his 50th birthday — Aug. 3, 2023. He referenced this transformation several times on his social media and on his YouTube channel. Those mentions led to speculation that he might come out of retirement to compete in the 2023 Masters Olympia contest, scheduled for the weekend of Aug. 25-27, 2023, in Romania — three weeks after Cutler’s birthday and conclusion of his personal challenge.

However, the Las Vegas, NV, native made it clear in various posts that he would not come out of retirement and that while he will be in Romania for the Masters Olympia, it will be as a guest, not a competitor. He remains committed to updating fans and supporters on his progress throughout this transformation.

Cutler is considered by many to be one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time and one of the most popular. He competed in the IFBB Pro League from 1999 until his retirement in 2013. Aside from his four Mr. Olympia titles (2006-07, 2009-10), he also won the Arnold Classic on three occasions (2002-04).

Cutler is also the only Men’s Open bodybuilder to place second at the Mr. Olympia 10 different times. He is also the only Men’s Open athlete to win the Olympia after losing the title. Even though it has been nine seasons since Cutler last competed, he remains an admired figure in the sport. He stays active in the bodybuilding community via his supplement line, YouTube channel, and podcast.

On Mar. 26. 2023, during a YouTube episode of the Cutler Cast, Cutler discussed the state of the Men’s Open with his talent manager Matthew M. Daniels. The discussion saw the four-time Mr. Olympia (2006-2007, 2009-2010) express that he believes the current cadre of Men’s Open competitors is the best shape it’s been in since the 1990s.

Cutler’s thoughts about the 2020s Men’s Open compared to the 1990s are high praise. Some would find it challenging to see similarities to an era that featured eight-time Mr. Olympia (1998-2005) Ronnie Coleman, six-time Olympia winner (1992-1997) Dorian Yates and four-time Arnold Classic (AC) Champion (1993, 1997, 1998, 2000) Ken “Flex” Wheeler.

Cutler doesn’t have such qualms.

He thinks a group led by defending Olympia champion Hadi Choopan, runner-up Derek Lunsford, third-place finisher Nick Walker, and rising star (2023 Arnold Classic winner) Samson Dauda is bound to have more than a few close battles. Especially at the 2023 Mr. Olympia.

“Hadi [Choopan] is going to be very difficult to beat [at the 2023 Olympia],” Cutler said. “People forget quick, man. You guys got to remember, he’s knocked at that door and he kicked that thing in. Not even, you know, a better overall look, but what he is capable of … I think Derek [Lunsford] is going to be tremendously better and Samson [Dauda] peaked once already this year … it’s tough. And Nick Walker is even more hungry now.”

Choopan, Lunsford, Dauda, and Walker aren’t the only potential top contenders. There’s still former two-time Mr. Olympia Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay to consider, along with 2019 Mr. Olympia and 2022 Arnold Classic winner Brandon Curry. The list of stars capable of winning the sport’s biggest title seemingly never ends.

It’s why Cutler thinks these men are right on par with the time of athletes like Coleman, Yates, and Wheeler.

The margins of victory can be so slim in a sport like bodybuilding. Every competitor in the Men’s Open division certainly understands that fact. Cutler’s analysis of the state of this class might only be the tip of the iceberg for the coming shows it’ll put on.

Now, he had more knowledge to share with anyone ready to learn from one of the greats.

On Mar. 22, 2023, Cutler posted a video to his YouTube channel where he broke down how to build an “Olympia” chest.

Here’s an overview of the latest chest routine Cutler shared on one of his main media platforms. Note: The exact repetitions and weight for each portion of the workout were not detailed.

Standing Calf Raise

Perhaps surprisingly, before attacking his chest, Cutler elects to target his lower body with with some standing calf raises. The athlete made do with the equipment he had available at the gym and performed the movement in a Smith machine with two 45-pound plates on each side.

Seated Calf Raise

After performing the standing variation, Cutler shifts to seated calf raises. Cutler maintained he didn’t enjoy performing this movement at first, given the awkward seated positioning, but eventually found a rhythm.

“This was one of the exercises where I just didn’t feel it a lot,” Cutler explained. “I had to figure out the right positioning to get under it.”

Machine Chest Press

Cutler finally began the meat-and-potatoes of the workout with his first chest exercise — a seated chest press on a machine. He did a few warm-up sets with two 45-pound plates on each side, which he called his “go-to warm-up,” followed by working sets using three 45-pound plates per side. He mentioned keeping approximately 45-60 seconds rest between each set.

Machine Incline Chest Fly

Cutler transitioned to chest flyes for complete development and focus on his chest. This also occurred on a plate-loaded machine. He appeared to keep it simple using relatively the same amount of weight, 75 pounds per hand, for each set.

Flat Dumbbell Press

Cutler declared the standard dumbbell bench press to be his favorite chest movement as he moved into the latter portions of his routine. He worked up to using a pair of 90-pound dumbbells for more than 12 repetitions, noting that his current goal is “maintenance,” rather than continuing to build muscular size.

Cutler stated his appreciation for the flat variation, but stressed that attacking the chest from all angles with a variety of movements is vital for a well-rounded build. Cutler would clarify where people sometimes go wrong with this movement regarding their technique.

“The wrong way to do it [the flat dumbbell press] is to come up and press those dumbbells together,” Cutler started. “Why? Because when you’re doing that movement and you’re coming up, you’re bringing your triceps in … Ideally, you want to treat it like a straight up and down motion, and as I’m doing that, I’m squeezing the chest, right? The point is to keep the shoulders back and the chest out. A lot of people aren’t feeling this movement because they can’t keep their shoulders back.”

Power Press

To close the workout, Cutler finished with a power chest press. The power press is specialized machine chest press variation that allows the athlete to stand in a back-supported position while performing the movement. Cutler appeared to stick to two 45-pound plates on each side for this closer.

One thing remains abundantly clear as Cutler nears age 50 — he’ll pull out all the stops to stay jacked and help others do the same if they choose. There are worse ideas than following the footsteps of a Mr. Olympia icon.

He just wasn’t the athlete some expected to stand on top of the podium. Now, the new title notch in Dauda’s belt is rightfully drawing the attention of prominent bodybuilding commentators and analysts. The overall message is clear: Dauda’s AC victory has put him on the map.

On Mar. 7, 2023, famed bodybuilding trainer Miloš Šarčev appeared on the Cutler Cast with Mr. Olympia icon Jay Cutler. The pair recapped the events of the AC which occurred just days earlier, and, naturally, they discussed Dauda’s standout performance. Šarčev and Cutler would eventually conclude that Dauda should be considered one of the top contenders for the 2023 Mr. Olympia title in early November.

Split Squat vs. Lunge: Upgrade Your Single-Leg Training

Šarčev and Cutler could have chosen their words carefully. They could’ve treaded lightly around the potential Dauda presents. Instead, they gave the first-time AC winner a ringing Olympia endorsement. (Note: Dauda finished in sixth place at the 2022 iteration of the contest.)

Why? They view Dauda as a well-rounded, elite competitor who can topple anyone, including reigning Olympia champion Hadi Choopan and runner-up Derek Lunsford.

He’s [Dauda] the best combination of everything,” Šarčev said. “Can he beat Hadi [Choopan] and Derek [Lunsford]? Yes. Would his conditioning and size beat them at the [2023] Olympia? We’d have to see them lined up next to each other.“

Cutler would echo this sentiment from Šarčev, explaining that he thinks Dauda is starting to piece together how to prepare for an elite performance on stage. The four-time Mr. Olympia (2006-2007, 2009-2010) related it to his own career experience and put it plainly.

Dauda just has to refine small details moving forward.

“I think now you’ve figured the formula and it’s just working to get the skin a little thinner as you progress,” Cutler said. “It’s just routine now … you’re in that ‘click’ period and there’s a certain click period that people go through. I experienced this in my late 20s … I feel that his [Dauda] peak is a little delayed because of the experience and you’ve seen this crazy growth over the last year. But now, it’s just refinement of the skin thinning down a little bit better. Nothing else. Everything will improve. It’s all about just routine and training.”

After winning the 2023 AC, Dauda would write in an Instagram post that “it’s a dream come true.” There’s no telling what sorts of emotions would run through the competitor were he to win his first Olympia title in the same year. Though, if Cutler and Šarčev are correct in their evaluation, a second bigger dream might be fulfilled for Dauda on November 3-5, 2023, in Orlando, FL.

Much like Hall’s previous bodybuilding-esque back routines in 2023 by himself and Jamie “The Giant” Christian, the athlete and Cutler featured a lot of pulldowns and rows.

Here’s a short overview of the complete workout, in order of movement. (Note: The pair did not disclose the exact number of sets and repetitions.) Cutler frequently emphasized the conditioning benefits of strict rest periods with 45 to 60 seconds between sets.

Machine Reverse-Grip Row

Among the more notable tips Cutler fed Hall about building mass and refining one’s back was during the lat pulldown. The bodybuilding icon had a lot to say about proper form as the 2017 World’s Strongest Man (WSM) worked through his set.

The idea, as it often is in bodybuilding, was about contracting the muscles enough to challenge them.

“I know this weight isn’t too heavy but we’re going to work on the contraction,” Cutler told Hall. “So, when you come down, I want you to kind of … this is kind of imitating the back double biceps, right? So, you’re going to squeeze, you know? Get that fire in the lats. So, make sure you get the contraction and don’t just pull the weight.”

Cutler appeared to really want to emphasize a quality lat pulldown for Hall. After all, it seemed to be one of the keys to his successful career on stage.

“I had a wider waist, so I had to offset. I had to build as big lats as possible,” Cutler explained to Hall. “So, because you always want to create that taper in bodybuilding, right? Because I was a little wider-waisted, the lats had to really flare out. So I really focused on the pulldown movements.”

As for how Cutler characterized Hall’s work ethic, he was very complimentary while the strongman/hopeful bodybuilder did his single-arm bent-over dumbbell rows.

“He’s [Hall] definitely the hardest worker in the room. That’s for sure.”

Hall’s workout with Cutler aside, he’s certainly not slowing down his bodybuilding ambitions. At least, according to his YouTube channel. Over the past few weeks, the athlete has posted videos of himself doing segments of bodybuilding training, working with Christian and Cutler, and even the powerful Larry Wheels.

At this rate, one fact seems abundantly clear — Hall will take extra bodybuilding knowledge wherever he can get it. And he’s getting it from some well-credentialed sources.

Nick Walker has spent the better part of the roughly last two years turning heads. The young bodybuilder won the 2021 Arnold Classic, took home a top-five debut result at the 2021 Mr. Olympia, and followed that performance with a podium finish behind Derek Lunsford (second) and Hadi Choopan (first) at the 2022 Olympia. As the next chapter of his already productive career unfolds, Walker will first tackle the 2023 Arnold Classic (AC) in March. It’s there where an established legend thinks the athlete should be the favorite.

On Jan. 26, 2023, during a podcast episode of The Cutler Cast, four-time Mr. Olympia champion (2006-2007, 2009-2010) Jay Cutler and esteemed trainer Miloš Šarčev discussed storylines and potential comparisons for the upcoming AC. One of the Cutler’s main points was that he believes Walker has a pole position for the Columbus, OH, contest on Mar. 2-5, 2023. It’s quite the endorsement for Walker from a respected competitor who, himself, is one of only four athletes to win the AC three times — Cutler captured the title in 2002-2004.

While the final complete roster for the 2023 AC hasn’t been confirmed at the time of this writing, Cutler expressed to Šarčev that he thinks the other athletes aren’t on par with Walker’s overall build. Notably, some of the early confirmed competitors include former two-time winner William Bonac (2018, 2020), Samson Dauda, Kamal Elgargni, and Akim Williams.

“Are the big dudes going to have enough combination to push Nick [Walker] to the side?” Cutler said rhetorically. “I have a hard time believing that.”

The only peer Cutler seems to believe can truly push Walker is former two-time Mr. Olympia (2020-2021), Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay. The Egyptian athlete had previously revealed he would compete at the 2023 AC in his second career appearance at the contest, having placed third in 2020. To Cutler, even with a disappointing fifth-place finish at the 2022 Mr. Olympia, if Elssbiay shows up in top form, it could morph into quite a battle.

“Ramy [Elssbiay] wasn’t full [at the 2022 Mr. Olympia],” Cutler said. “Ramy needed to be Ramy. His skin would have been tighter. His appearance, there would have been more roundness to everything. Listen, Ramy, we talked about it. If Ramy is 100 percent, he beats everybody. He’s still Big Ramy.”

That said, Cutler seems to sense something special and innate in Walker’s competitive mindset. He alluded to the point that Walker won’t let himself fall short so easily now that he’s established superstar in bodybuilding. As a result, for Cutler, a second AC title is clearly in the works for Walker.

“ … I just know Nick’s [Walker] mindset,” Cutler explained. “I know his vision. I know every night before he goes to bed, he’s visualizing winning this competition. And sometimes, you can’t overtake someone’s willpower. He believes more than anyone else on this planet. We can talk about the confidence of these people leading into these shows … I just don’t think there’s anyone more dedicated than Nick Walker. I think in the end, he’ll be a two-time champ.”

From the time of Cutler’s prediction, the 2023 AC is still a ways off. A lot can change in the coming weeks before Walker and the other respective athletes take the stage in Columbus. It’s possible that another top-tier challenger who can duke it out with Walker on stage might emerge. Until then, Walker seems to have Cutler’s wholehearted seal of approval, and that is no small thing.

En route to his legendary run of eight consecutive Mr. Olympia victories (1998-2005), Coleman relegated Cutler to second-place on four occasions (2001, 2003-2005). When push came to shove, and Cutler was ready for his long-awaited moment of glory, he would finally dethrone Coleman in 2006 and capture another title over his ripped peer in 2007.

Over a decade and a half later, Coleman and Cutler are two primary fixtures in the extended lore of bodybuilding history. The two former titans have a combined 12 Mr. Olympia titles (eight for Coleman, four for Cutler) and continue to be influential voices intimately concerned with the happenings of the modern sport. On Jan. 10, 2023, a video posted on Cutler’s YouTube channel features the two icons, joined by bodybuilding YouTube personality Jesse James West, plowing through a collaborative training session. Per the caption of Cutler’s video, the workout took place sometime during the 2022 Mr. Olympia weekend on Dec. 16-18, 2022.

The central focus of the three men’s joint workout was to chisel their respective back and biceps muscles. To commemorate the two legends he was training with, West had headbands and sleeveless flannels for everyone involved to adorn. A torn towel (reminiscent of these headbands) was a Cutler trademark look during the early parts of his career. Meanwhile, Coleman made wearing a sleeveless flannel his own staple during his dominant run as Mr. Olympia.

Once the workout got up and rolling, there was no stopping this whirlwind of strength and energy. The trio worked through respective sets of lat pulldowns, shifted to seated cable rows and single-arm machine rows, and implemented alternating traditional dumbbell curls throughout their routine. They did not specify the precise numbers and reps for each respective set.

In a treat for any spectating and diehard fans, Coleman and Cutler used the workout as an opportunity to swap unique anecdotes from Olympia legend to Olympia legend. It might have been an inside look at what it was like to be in the two men’s shoes while they were in their athletic primes.

Coleman and Cutler are certainly astute enough to know that what they have to offer bodybuilding now is more in line with their replete wisdom and experience.
To garner a place in the 2023 Masters Olympia, potential athletes must submit a “letter of intent” to an official email address — mastersolympia@mrolympia.com — that denotes their age, nationality, competitive background, and any personal social media platforms. In any submissions, athletes also have the option to include a video application — no longer than one minute) — and any images of their physique.

All applications must be submitted by Apr. 10, 2023. At the time of this article’s publication, it is unclear how the items in every athlete’s application will be evaluated for potential invitations.

Here are the age requirements for each of the respective divisions at the 2023 Masters Olympia:

In the last edition of the Masters Olympia in 2012 — which featured just the Men’s Open division — 2008 Mr. Olympia champion Dexter Jackson captured the crown. Jackson’s win came after the competition was absent for approximately nine years. Vince Taylor holds the most Masters Olympia titles, with five wins near the turn of the 20th century (1996-1997, 1999-2001).

There is no shortage of iconic competitors who could potentially pose on the stage in Romania in the Summer of 2023.

There’s Jackson, who technically remains the defending champion. There’s seven-time Mr. Olympia (2011-2017) Phil Heath, who stepped away from bodybuilding after a third-place result at the 2020 Mr. Olympia. He is evidently still keeping in shape, judging from his media presence.

There’s also Jay Cutler. The four-time Mr. Olympia (2006-2007, 2009-2010) did shoot down rumors of a Masters Olympia return in mid-October 2022, but those plans could potentially change in the coming months.

Even in a well-earned retirement, four-time Mr. Olympia (2006-2007, 2009-2010) Jay Cutler has made it a point to keep up with his physical fitness and nutrition. Over his various media platforms, the 49-year-old bodybuilding icon regularly posts training updates, his latest goals, and wisdom to those who may want to follow in his footsteps. As Cutler starts to look ahead to a life milestone — he turns 50 on Aug. 3, 2023 — he’s diligently working on staying healthy.

On Nov. 28, 2022, Cutler shared a video on his YouTube where he works through a shoulder and triceps routine that features 11 separate exercises (including some calves finishers). He says it’s a part of a personal challenge as he nears the next phase of his fitness life.

Pre-workout, Cutler discussed how his work in the gym is going these days. While he’s stayed in the public eye with recent back workouts from the 2022 calendar year, he hasn’t always outlined his current physical state. Based on the sentiments surrounding this recent workout, Cutler doesn’t seem to be in a rush. He’s gradually pushing ahead to his long-term goals.

“Training is going well,” Cutler explains. “We’re working toward that ‘Fit for 50.’ I got up and did the stairs this morning. I’m on a mission, dude. I only did 30 minutes, so I’m not in the full swing of things.”

As for why he’s staying so dedicated in the gym and the kitchen, Cutler expresses that this routine is part of what he calls an ongoing “planned transformation” with his 50th birthday getting closer by the month. In mid-October 2022, after posing with influencer Lexx Little, some had speculated Cutler was seeking a competitive return as a Masters bodybuilder. He quickly squashed those rumors, noting he simply wants to maintain a high level of individual health.

Here’s an overview of Cutler’s complete shoulders and triceps workout from a glance:

Jay Cutler | “Fit for 50” Shoulders and Triceps Workout

Incline Barbell Front Raise — One set

Incline Rear Delt Flye — Two sets

Machine Triceps Extension — Two sets

Cable Triceps Pushdown — One set

Kneeling Rope Triceps Pushdown — Two sets

Seated Cable Overhead Triceps Extension — One set

Seated Calf Raise — One set

Leg Press Machine Calf Raise — One set

During the workout itself, Cutler maintains he’s occasionally changed up segments and focuses of his upper-body training splits. He remains proficient in this aspect of his training, but it doesn’t appear to be something he appreciates.

“I’ve gone back and forth,” Cutler said. “I did arms together, I did chest and triceps. But now I do shoulders and triceps. And ask me why I split arm training, where I train most of the body parts together like legs. I hate arms. For my first-time viewers, I hate training arms.”

Post-workout, Cutler explains that the window after one finishes working out is the most essential time to accumulate proper nutrition for recovery and strength-building. Regardless of one’s preference, Cutler says any way to get protein in the body as fast as possible is ideal.

“Post-workout nutrition is the most important food,” Cutler clarifies. “But the question is, are protein shakes better after training or is whole food better after training? I think having immediate protein to get your body that replenishment is always great. Then, follow-up with an hour of actual digestible food.”

With no plans for a competitive return any time soon, Cutler is free to experiment with his workouts, training, and general influence on the bodybuilding world as he pleases. The living legend certainly appears to value the power he possesses with his massive platform, and it’s likely not something he takes lightly. For this strength sports titan, he can get “Fit for 50” at his own pace.

Yet, after an Oct. 14, 2022, Instagram post from fitness apparel company Schiek Sports Inc. — where Cutler posed and looked ripped next to fitness influencer Lexx Little — speculation arose that the retired athlete was planning a return to the stage.

On Oct. 17, 2022, Cutler addressed the rumors of his potential competitive return as a Masters bodybuilder (ages 45-plus). Amidst his clarification and thoughts for the future, the icon clarified that he has no intention of competing soon. According to Cutler, his new lean physique that lit up the strength sports sphere was about him taking better care of himself.

Cutler wastes no time shooting down any thought of his competitive return in his video testimonial.

“Well, those pictures are floating on the internet right now from when I was in Venice [CA], and they’re starting to say, ‘Oh, Jay is coming back for the Masters,'” said Cutler. “We need to squash it.”

On Feb. 12, 2022, during an episode of his podcast, Olympia President Jake Wood signaled that, after an absence, the Masters Olympia would potentially return sometime in the year 2023. (Note: At the time of this article’s publication, there has not been an official update on this front.) With that door open, some in the bodybuilding community thought Cutler would intend to walk through it.

Cutler shot down that specific assertion, as well, by saying too much was read into his brush with Little.

“Jake [Wood] is having it [the Masters Olympia], right? … It sounds about right. Jake would do something like that,” Cutler mused. “Drop the picture of me posing with Lexx Little, who’s a pretty popular influencer. So we did a video together. He conned me into going to the posing room.”

Per Cutler, he thought his posing stunt with Little would be of little consequence and appeared to have fun with it more than anything. It seems to have just been an unfortunate oversight.

“You know me; I don’t pose,” Cutler said. “I don’t want to say ‘conned,’ but he [Little] asked me, and I said, ‘You know what, I’ll go in there.’ I didn’t realize it would go so viral. Now it’s floating everywhere.”

As for why Cutler seems to be committed to polishing up his physique in retirement through his training — he maintained he just wants to look great and be healthy.

“I’m doing this body transformation challenge just to try to look my best,” Cutler explained. “That means being leaner, and I don’t know what my physique is going to look like, to be honest. Like right now, I’m really lean, but I could tighten up a few areas. I want to get a little fuller. I don’t know if that necessarily means bigger on a scale, but that’s kind of the goal.”

Despite that plan, even if he won’t formally compete, Cutler didn’t rule out potential guest-posing cameos.

“I’m not going on a competition stage, but you know what I would like if I felt confident enough; if my body actually came around enough, I would actually consider posing,” Cutler said. ” … I’m still getting a ton of requests to come out and pop into events. So, it could be a possibility.”
