Over the past year or so, Grigsby has fluctuated between the 110-kilogram, 125-kilogram, and 140-kilogram divisions. Such versatility has facilitated the athlete now possessing the raw deadlift World Record in all three classes.

According to Open Powerlifting, Grigsby achieved his 125-kilogram record deadlift mark of 487.4 kilograms (1,074.7 pounds) at the 2022 WRPF American Pro. The powerlifting star would notch his 140-kilogram achievement of 464.9 kilograms (1,025.1 pounds) at the 2022 USPA Virginia Beach Classic 2. It was specifically this latter pull that saw Grigsby become the first-ever powerlifter to pull a raw deadlift with at least 453.6 kilograms (1,000 pounds) in a full power meet. Factor in Grigsby’s fresh 110-kilogram deadlift accomplishment, and he now has complete pulling dominion over three separate sections of the record books.

In an Instagram post immediately following the contest, the athlete apparently “came short” of his overall expectations without elaborating. That said, he wrote that his latest record deadlift let him end the meet on a “high note.” In a separate post, Grigsby also announced plans to return to the 125-kilogram (275-pound) class for the WRPF American Pro 2, taking place October 27-29 in Manassas, Virginia.

At this point, hoping for a flourish from Grigsby any time he plans to deadlift should probably be the baseline expectation. He’s established himself as deadlifting royalty, seemingly always ready to conquer another loaded barbell.

The deadlift appeared so casual to Grigsby that while holding his loaded barbell up for several seconds, he beamed a wide smile before the official on hand signaled that he could release the weight.
Entering this edition of the WRPF American Pro, Grigsby was already powerlifting’s greatest deadlifter at both 125 kilograms and 140 kilograms.

In a demonstration of his stellar deadlift strength, Grigsby exceeded his own previous All-Time World Record from the 2022 United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) Virginia Beach Classic earlier in the contest. The powerlifter successfully pulled 467.5 kilograms (1,031 pounds) on his second attempt — surpassing his past record mark by 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds). When Grigsby stepped on stage for his third attempt of 487.5 kilograms (1,074.7 pounds), he not only smashed his previous figure by 22.5 kilograms (49.6 pounds) — he became the first person to ever deadlift over 1,000 pounds raw twice in the same full powerlifting meet.

Notably, Grigsby’s deadlift record of 465 kilograms (1,025.2 pounds) is still the best ever in the 140-kilogram weight class.

In addition to his new record deadlift, Grigsby notched raw personal competition bests on his bench press (207.5 kilograms/457.4 pounds), squat (350 kilograms/771.6 pounds), and total (1045 kilograms/2,303.8 pounds). That total is the second-heaviest all-time, putting Grigsby within 17.7 pounds of Zac Meyers’ All-Time World Record from the 2020 USPA No Luck Needed Open.

In a post on his Instagram profile, Grigsby reflected on his new achievements and the extended efforts he made to reach them.

“Looking back on this year, it’s been a blur because of back-to-back meet preps, six weeks apart and being dialed in during that whole time the last seven months,” Grigsby wrote. “I took the 308-pound [weight class] all-time deadlift record from 940 [pounds] to 1025 and the 275-pound [weight class] all-time deadlift record from 970 [pounds] to 1,074 [pounds].”

Even after reaching his lofty goal of at least a 1,043.2-kilogram (2,300-pound) total, Grigsby made it clear he’s not satisfied. The powerlifter wants to keep pushing for even more significant milestones as he starts to look toward the year 2023.

“I’m proud of all that [his records], but I’m even more hungry now to keep solidifying my squat and bench and push to the total more next year.”

In late March 2022, Danny Grigsby (140KG) became the first ever powerlifter to pull a raw deadlift over 1,000 pounds in a sanctioned contest. He completed the 465-kilogram (1,025.2-pound) pull at the 2022 United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) Virginia Beach Classic 2 for an all-time World Record. Months later, during the dog days of July, Grigsby almost makes the strength achievement seem like an everyday occurrence.

On July 17, 2022, while using a sumo stance and overhand grip, Grigsby shared footage of himself deadlifting 455 kilograms (1,003 pounds) raw during a training session.

Last heavy pull, hands are not a issue now, thankfully. Everything is coming together at just the right time.

After the stacked barbell flew off the ground, the pull looked so easy for the 28-year-old Grigsby that he held the weight for a few seconds at the top of his rep, beaming a smile from ear to ear.

In the comments of his Instagram post, Grigsby’s staggering pull drew the attention of notable powerlifting peers like Jamal Browner and Ashton Rouska.

Notably, while Grigsby owns the all-time deadlift World Record in the 125-kilogram division, Browner is no slouch when it comes to pulling massive weight. A recent 432.5-kilogram (953.5-pound) conventional stance PR is an excellent example of what he brings to the table. Additionally, according to Open Powerlifting, Browner’s 440.5-kilogram (971-pound) deadlift from the 2020 World Raw Powerlifting Federation (WRPF) Hybrid Showdown II is the heaviest raw deadlift from a full power meet in the 110-kilogram weight class.

As two athletes proficient with their deadlifts, Grigsby and Browner have collaborated in the past.

Roughly three weeks before Grigsby pulled over 1,000 pounds again, he and Browner trained together at Corrupted Strength — a gym in Stafford, Texas. While it’s unclear what the two taught each other, it might not be a stretch to assume it was a mutually worthwhile session for two of the strongest athletes on the planet.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Grigsby has a busy schedule ahead of him. The athlete will compete at the 2022 WRPF The American Pro. That contest will take place on July 29-30, 2022, in Manassas, VA.

Per his Instagram, Grigsby’s lofty goals as a competitor remain unchanged — he wants to capture at least a 1,043.3-kilogram (2,300-pound) total in a sanctioned lifting contest. At the time of this writing, the athlete’s heaviest-ever total is 1,025.1 kilograms (2,116.4 pounds) from the 2022 USPA Virginia Beach Classic 2. That is also the World Record for the 140-kilogram division.

Wierzbicki notched the all-time pull from a sumo stance while wearing wrist straps. He also may have been wearing a lifting belt under his shirt, but that is undisclosed for now.

At the time of writing, Wierzbick’s weight for the all-time accomplishment is unknown. If recent history is any indication, he might have weighed at or around 110 kilograms — his competition weight since Spring 2021, per Open Powerlifting.

Notably, since Wierzbicki’s momentous deadlift didn’t occur in a formal competition, it is not an official record. Nevertheless, it is the heaviest-ever deadlift from the floor and worthy of his evident jubilation upon completing the pull.

Wierzbicki’s Feat in Context

With this pull, Wierzbicki has gained entry into the legendary 500-kilogram (1,102.3-pound) deadlift club. There are only two other members — the 2017 World’s Strongest Man (WSM) Champion Eddie Hall and the 2018 WSM Champion Hafthor Björnsson.

Hall was the first to capture the achievement with a 500-kilogram (1,102.3-pound) pull during the 2016 World Deadlift Championships (WDC). Björnsson then surpassed his rival by a single kilogram at the 2020 World’s Ultimate Strongman “Feats of Strength Series.”

Notably, aside from the formal competition difference, there are other vital distinctions between Wierzbicki’s historic pull and that of his 500-kilogram predecessors. The powerlifter Wierzbicki completed his deadlift from a sumo stance — which isn’t legal during strongman competitions. In addition, the Polish athlete just used wrist straps. Björnsson and Hall wore wrist straps and deadlift suits for their pulls.

With Wierzbicki’s record taken into account, here’s a shortlist of the heaviest deadlifts of all time:

Heaviest Recorded Deadlifts in History

Krzysztof Wierzbicki (Poland) — 502.5 kilograms (1,107 pounds) | Unofficial Record

Hafthor Björnsson (Iceland) — 501 kilograms (1,104.5 pounds) | All-time World Record

Eddie Hall (United Kingdom) — 500 kilograms (1,102.3 pounds)

Danny Grigsby (United States) — 465 kilograms (1,025.2 pounds) | Full Power Meet Record

Benedikt Magnússon (Iceland) — 465 kilograms (1,025.2 pounds) | Deadlift-only Meet

Whether Wierzbicki is capable of eclipsing Björnsson and Hall on their strongman, conventional, fully equipped terms is unclear. However, when it comes to powerlifting, it’s apparent he has the capacity to surpass his contemporary in Grigsby — who also used a sumo stance, but no wrist straps — on his full power meet record mark set in late March 2022.

Whenever Wierzbicki does compete in a meet next, expect the greater strength sports community to be on watch for a potential new deadlift record.

For the pull, Grigsby forgoes all equipment save for a lifting belt. He also completes the deadlift double with relative ease from a sumo stance.

In the Instagram post’s caption, Grigsby elected for self-deprecation to describe the training session. He alluded to minor sleep troubles in a seeming joking desire to get a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment. It doesn’t seem like Grigsby’s apparent lack of sleep prevented him from showing off his tremendous power.

“Counting down the days until I get a CPAP, so I’ll recover better and won’t feel like dog-sh** every workout,” Grigsby wrote.

A fellow powerlifter with a similar deadlift prowess, Jamal Browner, poked fun at Grigsby’s pulls, writing in a reply, “Can you please chill out?” Meanwhile, four-time Men’s Physique Olympia Champion (2014-2017) Jeremy Buendia marveled at Grigsby’s strength, quickly commenting, “Easy work, man! Incredible.”

Indeed, as long as he continues to share incredible strength feats like this, the 28-year-old Grigsby may draw attention from major corners across the strength sports world.

Pulling at Full Strength

This sort of staggering deadlift double is nothing new for Grigsby.

Recently, the powerlifter became the first person ever to deadlift 1,000 pounds in a full power meet with an all-time world record 465-kilogram pull (1,025-pound) set during the 2022 United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) Virginia Beach Classic 2. Grigsby notched the achievement while competing in the 125-kilogram weight class.

Following that record feat, Grigsby said that he was working through some minor leg ailments over social media. They were prevalent enough for him to take aspects of his training gradually — especially but not limited to his deadlift. Roughly two weeks later, in April 2022, Grigsby seemingly quelled all concerns when he pulled a 415-kilogram deadlift (915 pounds) for two reps and then crushed a 770-pound deadlift for an eight-rep, volume PR.

Grigsby accomplished each of his recent training feats, like his new deadlift training double, while wearing only a lifting belt. Suffice to say that if these pulls are what taking it easy looks like, then Grigsby certainly looks like he’s back at a full power capacity.

Whenever he’s on a sanctioned lifting platform again, his new stated goal remains unchanged — He wants to notch at least a 1,043.3-kilogram (2,300-pound) total.

Such a mark would give Grigsby the second-heaviest total for a competitor in the 125-kilogram weight class. Zac Myers holds the current world record with a 1,053-kilogram total (2,321.5-pound), set at the 2020 USPA No Luck Needed Open.

Grigsby’s continued impressive work with his deadlift will undoubtedly be a factor in capturing that achievement.

Only weeks removed from notching a professional powerlifting first, these are stellar training feats for the 28-year-old Grigsby. The powerlifter had previously noted he was working through minor quad tweaks. As a result, he took the necessary precautions to avoid any further unexpected pitfalls in training.

Starting to do volume again, this is brutal

It seems Grigsby is well on his way back toward full power and endurance with these respective pulls.

Putting in the Work

Grigsby stepping up his deadlift training is an excellent sign for his prospects over the rest of the year 2022. With almost a decade’s worth of experience under his belt, he is no stranger to pushing for success as a professional powerlifter.

During the 2022 United States Powerlifting Association (USPA) Virginia Beach Classic 2, Grigsby became the first person to deadlift over 1,000 pounds in a full powerlifting meet when he pulled 465 kilograms (1,025.2 pounds). He achieved this feat while competing in the raw 125-kilogram weight class.

Here are notable results from Grigsby’s still-evolving career:

2013 USPA Downing’s Gym Classic — 1st overall | Juniors

2013 USPA West Coast Open — 1st overall | Juniors

2014 USPA Oregon State Open — 1st overall | Juniors

2014 USPA Washington State Summer Strength Wars — 1st overall | Juniors

2014 USPA West Coast Regional Powerlifting Championships — 1st overall | Juniors

2015 World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters (WABDL) North American — 1st overall | Juniors

2017 USPA DCS Winter Open — 2nd overall | Open

2019 USPA California State Championships — 1st overall | Open

2020 USPA Iron Mongers Pro Day — 1st overall | Open

2021 World Raw Powerlifting Federation (WRPF) The Bucked Up Showdown — 4th overall | Open

2022 USPA Virginia Beach Classic 2 — 1st overall | Open

Benefits of Volume Lifting

It’s one thing for an athlete to test their max strength with one great rep. It’s another task to push for a high volume with a degree of challenge.

Research has shown that pushing volume on a short-term basis with a lift can be integral to progress for a competitive athlete. However, it’s not advisable to focus on volume solely. An athlete should mix it with high-intensity, i.e., a challenging but still attainable weight.

People who managed to thread this training needle appropriately in their training for a few weeks saw noticeable upticks in hypertrophy (or muscle growth). (1)

Deadlifting for volume places considerable stress on the lower body, too. The workout is a great activator of an athlete’s hamstrings and gluteus maximus muscles (or butt), but those aren’t its primary benefactors. Partly due to the nature of the pull and eventual rep lockout, the deadlift primarily centers on activating an athlete’s quads and erector spinae (or back muscles). (2)

If a powerlifter such as Grigsby can pull a deadlift for both power and volume, then it would appear he’s performing at or near top level again.

Lofty Goals

Grigsby has not yet announced when he’ll compete in another powerlifting meet. Whenever that does happen, he has said his next major goal is to lift a 1,043.3-kilogram (2,300-pound) total between the squat, bench press, and deadlift. That total would make Grigsby second all-time behind a 1,053-kilogram (2,321.5-pound) world record set by Zac Meyers at the 2020 USPA No Luck Needed Open.

One potential upcoming option for an event is the 2022 WRPF American Pro, which will take place on July 29-30, 2022, in Manassas, VA. Grigsby competed in a WRPF event (his first-ever) as recently as September 2021 and could look to do so again.

If his recent deadlift training is any indication, Grigsby may continue to reach his ambitious goals regardless of wherever he competes next.

With time on the clock running, Grigsby shows a degree of perseverance. At first, the deadlift appears to be challenging for the powerlifter, who sets himself up in a wider sumo stance. To the crowd’s encouragement, Grigsby pushes through an initial strain and eventually quickly locks out the pull with good form. In this case, it looks like the third time was indeed the charm.

A Record in Context

Grigby’s achievement puts him in excellent company. According to Open Powerlifting, the previous record-holder for the heaviest raw deadlift in a full power meet was held by Jamal Browner — who pulled 440.5 kilograms (971 pounds) at the 2020 World Raw Powerlifting Federation (WRPF) Hybrid Showdown II at 110 kilogras. Grigsby not only surpassed Browner’s mark, he shattered it by an astonishing 24.5 kilograms (54 pounds).

Here are Grigsby’s full stats from the meet:

USPA Virginia Beach Classic 2 Results — Danny Grigsby | 125KG

Squat | 275 kilograms (606.3 pounds)

Deadlift | 465 kilograms (1,025.2 pounds) | All-Time World Record

Total | 940 kilograms (2,072.4 pounds)

In a post on his Instagram page, Grigsby elaborated on what went into his exceptional performance. The powerlifter noted that he “didn’t push squats” and recently started to overcome some mental barriers with his bench press. Notably, he had previously injured his quads multiple times, possibly setting back his progress. In response, during the meet, Grigsby modulated the weight on his barbell to mitigate potential injury.

Even still, a 274.8-kilogram squat (606 pounds) is nothing to sneeze at in a sanctioned event. Grigsby’s career-best in a formal competition is 337.5 kilograms (744.1 pounds), which he managed at the 2020 USPA Iron Mongers Pro Day.

All in all, Grigsby said part of this process was about looking ahead. He alluded to competing sometime again in the summer of 2022. Naturally, he wants to keep his quads and hips healthy for that coming occasion.

Here are additional angles of Grigsby’s lifts from his record-breaking meet, via his Instagram profile. The first clip is of Grigsby’s record-breaking deadlift. Scroll right once to see his bench press, and scroll right twice to see his squat.

Powering Through Injury

It’s worth noting that Grigsby’s honest struggle with injuries from his squats is nothing out of the ordinary for a powerlifter.

One study showed that a majority of dedicated powerlifters (anyone who’s been powerlifting for a minimum of a calendar year) are contending with at least some sort of acute injury related to their training routine. (1) Almost half of the study’s participants had two different ongoing injuries. Of course, in a refrain that will ring familiar, the most common injuries, by far, were related to the powerlifter’s hips and quads and their respective heavy squats and deadlifts.

Grigsby listening to his body and making appropriate adjustments is also nothing new for a powerlifter. Over half of the powerlifters from the same study continued to train despite reporting at least one concurrent injury (1). While never stopping their training, most of these people instead made changes to the amount of weight they lifted and their technique — similarly to Grigsby.

The Summer Ahead

Whenever Grigsby does compete in the summer of 2022, he has said his new goal is at least a 1,043.3-kilogram (2,300-pound) total. Such a mark would give him the second-heaviest total of all time for someone competing at 125-kilograms. Only Zac Meyers‘ 1,053-kilogram (2,321.5-pound) world record total from the 2020 USPA No Luck Needed Open would exceed it.

Given the record Grigsby broke, his careful and attentive approach to the USPA Virginia Beach Classic 2 appeared to be a good start.
