I added a “fun” event to my training protocol last week. The Camp Gladiator Games Tryouts are a fun little test that I have taken on. Last year the entire event was trials and finals of a five minute obstacle course. I absolutely LOVE obstacle courses! This year they held tryouts on six events to qualify for the finals.

Part 1 of the CG tryouts:

  • 100m Sprint – 13.09 (hand time at finish line)
  • 2 Miles: 16:21
  • 20 Touch Cone Drill: 0:29.87

Tryouts Part 2 (did not remember my times):

  • 400m Run with 25lb sand bag
  • 120yd sand bell chest pass
  • 120yd bear crawl with 50lb sand bag

These tests are an important reminder to have FUN! I easily get caught up in the competition and the emphasis on hard work. I forget fitness training is essentially play time. By allowing myself to take part in an event like the Camp Gladiator Games tryouts, I can play with events that don’t have much long term importance for me and do something different.

This week I coach a kids CrossFit camp at a local community center. I’m looking forward to lots of games, play, imagination, and FUN! We have plenty of relays, partner WODs, some swimming, and some educational discussions planned. But mostly I am looking forward to the kids teaching us some of their favorite games and having lots of laughs!

About Ingrid Kantola

Ingrid Kantola studied Sociology at UCLA and was an All-American pole vaulter. After graduating in 2008, she made her way through local 5Ks, and old strength training routines until she found CrossFit in 2009.

Ingrid’s first CrossFit competition was the Southern California Regional in 2009, and after training on her own at UCLA she finished in ninth place. She joined CrossFit Los Angeles shortly after the Regional and went on to sweep the events of the 2010 SoCal Sectional before a bacterial heart infection and subsequent open heart surgery sidelined her for the summer season. Ingrid recovered quickly and moved from the City of Angels to Hell’s Half Acre to continue her journey as a University of Texas Graduate Student in Sport Management.

Ingrid began interning at CrossFit Central in Austin, Texas and trained at the RedBlack Gym under Coach Michael Winchester until she was ready to join the elite training group of coaches at CrossFit Central. In 2011, she qualified for the South Central Regional and took sixth place behind five previous Games competitors. She has continued training at CrossFit Central with an increased focus on strength and metabolic conditioning.

For the 2012 season, Ingrid hopes to qualify as an individual athlete and take her first trip to the Home Depot as a CrossFit competitor.

As an intern at CrossFit Central her job responsibilities have been in event planning for challenges and competitions. She graduates in May and will assume a new role as the Director of Events and CrossFit Sport for Trinity Training Systems.
