Art can be so much more meaningful when you know a little bit more about the person behind it – the eye behind the lens. That’s why I periodically profile sports/action photographers and their work. Read on to learn about photographer Robert Sturman and get a good look at the world through his eyes:
For professional photographer Robert Sturman, his medium and his passions have always been linked. As he explained, “When I was fourteen, my father gave me my first camera. When I asked him what I was supposed to take pictures of, he responded ‘anything that you love.’ That has actually been the greatest teaching in my development as an artist”
Robert’s work highlights the beauty of yoga poses and asanas, but for Robert it goes deeper than a physical presentation. You can see when you look at Robert’s photos that there is a spirit that emanates from the photo subject and the photo itself. “There is something so expressive about the human spirit that comes through in the yoga poses,” observed Robert.
Ultimately, just as yoga helps people transcend the physical, Robert hopes that his photos can help people transcend how they see themselves as well. That perhaps seeing themselves through his lens will help them see themselves and their lives through a new lens. Shared Robert:
Photographs are healing. An image can change a person’s self-perception. I realized that a couple of years ago when I decided to turn the camera on myself and do a series of self-portraits. I had always wanted to do a boxing theme and one day I chose to be my own model. I had been going through a tough time in my life and when I saw the images of myself as a warrior, something inside on me began to see that side of myself a lot more. Because of that series, I changed, I grew, I triumphed. Photographs can change the world.
