The final for the 100-meter dash was an event that was star-studded. The race included current defending gold medalist Usain Bolt, as well as fellow Jamaicans Asafa Powell and Yohan Blake. All three hopefuls from the U.S. participated as well, as Justin Gaitlin, Tyson Gay, and Ryan Bailey give it their all at a shot for gold. Bolt was somewhat unimpressive in earlier heats, but performed when it mattered, earning gold yet again today. Usain Bolt finished with an Olympic record time of 9.63, .06 seconds better than what he ran in Beijing in 2008. Teammate Powell finished with a time of 9.75 to earn silver, and former gold medalist Justin Gaitlin earned the bronze for the U.S. by finishing with a time of 9.79. Tyson Gay from the U.S. finished just 0.01 seconds behind Gaitlin, and narrowly missed the podium.
The U.S. women’s basketball team put on a fantastic performance against China, with a blowout victory of 114-66. The American women are now (5-0), and big favorites for the gold. The victory was the Americans’ 38th straight in Olympic play and gave them the top seed in the quarterfinals. The other quarterfinal matchups will be undefeated France against the Czech Republic, Australia versus China, and Russia against Turkey.
Venus and Serena earned the U.S. another gold medal as they defended their doubles title in women’s tennis by defeating Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-4. “It’s great because America’s added three gold medals to our medal count just in the tennis,” Venus said. “I feel great to be a part of this U.S. team this year.”
China has regained both the overall (61) as well as the gold medal lead (30). The U.S. is still within reach with 60 total medals, and 28 golds.
