Athlete Journal: Travis Holley, Entry 21 – 9/8/12

Are you content with where you're at in your life? I hope not. I hope, for your sake, that you are always pushing yourself to grow. One of the best ways to make sure you are is to seek out a mentor.

Travis Holley – Athlete Journal 9/8/12

(Read Travis’s Bio here)

For this week’s post I want to share with y’all an important lesson that I’ve learned and have lived by since I was young. That is that you MUST have mentors and leaders in your life.

This seems really straight-forward, I know. But do this for me: the next time you’re around a group of your friends, ask them if they have a mentor they still stay in touch with on a regular basis. I bet this “straight-forward” idea is not such a popular concept when it’s a point blank question. Just a guess, though.

So why is it so many people neglect the idea of having a mentor as they grow older? It’s my theory that as we age, we tend to think we know what it takes to get by. We’ve made it this far, right? I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to just get by. I want to live an OUTSTANDING life. And I’ll be honest – I don’t know everything there is to know about living an extraordinary life. On the flipside, I do know there are people out there living their dreams. In fact, I have several of them as my mentors. My thought: why not go to those who live the way I want to live for advise and guidance?

This is the same idea as an athlete who wants to get faster going to the best sprint coach he can find. If the athlete is serious about his goals, anyway. You’re not going to go to some fat, out of shape bum for advise on how to get blazing fast. At least I hope not.

Here’s my point. You had coaches, mentors, and leaders who served you by guiding you when you were younger. Why should it be any different now? Are you content with where you’re at in your life? I hope not. Being content is a slow way to die. I hope, for your sake, that you are always pushing yourself to grow. One of the best ways to make sure you are is to seek out a mentor who will guide you and push you to places you’re not sure you can go.

That’s the key to an OUTSTANDING life – GROWTH!

About Travis Holley

Travis Holley grew up in the wonderful and exciting town ofEvanston, Wyoming (look it up).It was a great town to grow up in, but with not a whole lot to do he spent most of his time outside causing trouble in the neighborhood or playing sports. This is where he developed his passion for fitness and an active lifestyle. This love for health and fitness drove Travis to pursue his BS degree in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Northern Colorado. This is also where his mentor first introduced Travis to CrossFit. "Cindy" was his first WOD, and ever since then he's been hooked!

Early on in his CrossFit career, Travis was involved in the start-up of two separate CrossFit affiliates in Colorado, and while doing so developed enough skill as a CrossFitter to compete in the 2008 Regionals, placing 10th overall. He would have a new home and training ground, however, by the summer of 2009.Travis jumped at a life-changing job offer at CrossFit Central in Austin, Texas.Since joining Central, Travis has earned a head coaching role as well as created his own brand and program, Strictly Strength.Among other elite-level specialty groups, this program is now one of the select training methods used by the CrossFit Central competitors as they prepare for the 2012 Games.

As the CrossFit Central team prepares for the 2012 Games, Travis hopes his five years of CrossFitting, and previous Games' experience will help solidify a first place spot for the strong and extremely well-rounded affiliate team.
