The United States men’s gymnastics team earned some redemption Wednesday as Danell Levya earned the bronze in the individual all-around event. Leyva was in a hole early on due to some miscues on the pommel horse, but rallied back to stand on the podium. Kohei Uchimura from Japan earned the gold for the event and Marcel Nguyen earned silver for Germany.
Kristin Armstrong brought home the gold in the cycling time trials. Armstrong completed the 18-mile course south of London in a time of 37:34.82, which was more than 15 seconds better than world champion Judith Arndt of Germany.
Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte qualified for the 200-meter individual medley. Phelps came in fourth, while Lochte came in second. Phelps is the defending gold medalist at this event, winning gold at both Athens and Beijing. Lochte earned the bronze in Beijing, and is looking for his first gold in the event. The 200-meter individual medley will be held on Thursday, and has all the makings for an exciting event.
In women’s tennis Venus Williams lost her third round match to the seventh seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany, 7-6(5), 7-6(5). “I made a few errors and she hit a few winners, and things can go quickly in tennis,” Williams said. However, Serena Williams advanced to the quarterfinals as she hit twelve aces to help her to an easy victory, 6-1, 6-0. “I was just playing unbelievable,” she said. “I was nervous going into the match and I didn’t speak to anyone and I had a bad practice. I had no idea I would play like this.”
The men’s basketball team overcame a lackluster first half as it routed Tunisia 110-63. The U.S. was up at half time, and Coach Mike Krzyzewski started the reserves to open the second half. Coach K insists this was not the reason to starting the reserves that half, and that he had already planned to do so. Carmelo Anthony, Deron Williams, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love, and Andre Iguodala opened the third quarter with a 21-3 run. “That was a great lift, man. That’s the best thing about this team, there’s no drop off,” said Kevin Durant. “We’ve got All-Stars off the bench. Those guys did a great job for us.” The U.S men’s team is now (3-0) in pool play and will face Nigeria, who is (1-1) thus far. The women’s basketball team will take on turkey. Turkey gave the women’s team a run back on July 22, so this matchup could prove to be interesting.
China has once again regained control of the medal lead with 30, compared to that of 29 for the U.S. China also still has the lead in gold medals, with 17, while the U.S. has 12.
