Coaching Rapport and Anxiety in Athletes

Previous research has examined the dynamic relationship between coaches and athletes. New research analyzed the impact coaching behaviors and rapport on an athletes’ perceived levels of anxiety.

Previous research has examined the dynamic relationship between coaches and athletes. New research in The Journal of Science and Medicine Sports analyzed impact coaching behaviors and rapport on an athletes’ perceived levels of anxiety. Researchers evaluated 228 athletes from 15 different sporting backgrounds. Athletes were assessed on the Sport Anxiety Scale and the Coaching Behavior Scale for Sport.

Researchers examined 7 coaching behaviors including; physical training, mental preparation, goal setting, technical skills, competition strategies, personal rapport and negative personal rapport. They also assessed four different types of anxiety including; total anxiety, somatic anxiety, concentration disruption, and worry.

Researchers concluded that coaches and athletes with negative personal rapport, had significant increases in athlete anxiety. Overall, negative rapport between coach and athletes was determined to be a contributor to athlete anxiety. It is also important to note that positive behavior and rapport between athlete and coach aided in reducing athlete anxieties.

About Mindith Rahmat

Mindith is a born mover. She has spent her life exploring various athletic disciplines, starting with ballet and modern dance from an early age. She went on to become a E-RYT 500 certified yoga therapist and teacher and discovered CrossFit after the birth of her daughter.

Mindith coached CrossFit at a number of boxes near her home in Southern California, which lead to her involvement in Russian kettlebells and Olympic weightlifting. She has coached a wide variety of populations and cares deeply for women’s health, specializing in pregnancy and postpartum fitness. She is currently studying the principles of Natural Movement and Kettlebell Sport, and is working to complete an additional teacher training in the Taoist art of Yin Yoga with Master Paulie Zink.
