CrossFit Open Prep and Your Gym Family

To get the most from your fitness in 2018, start with an honest assessment of your needs.

Written by Pete Hitzeman Last updated on January 7, 2018

Every year as the CrossFit Open approaches, I end up Googling last year’s schedule, because I’m convinced it’s earlier this year than last. And every year, I’m reassured that the Open starts the same week it always has. It only feels like it’s creeping up on us.

Every year as the CrossFit Open approaches, I end up Googling last year’s schedule, because I’m convinced it’s earlier this year than last. And every year, I’m reassured that the Open starts the same week it always has. It only feels like it’s creeping up on us.

On the show today to help us get ready for the 2018 CrossFit Open is our own Mike Tromello, master coach, programmer extraordinaire, and owner of Precision CrossFit in Agoura Hills, California. We cover how he’s getting his athletes prepared for this year’s CrossFit Games season, how the change to the Regionals format has affected his athletes, and why we probably won’t see a week added to the Open.

Then we zoom out and talk about what you should look for if you’re shopping for a gym this January, how he brings new members into his fitness family, and what he’s learned from the wide variety of coaching certifications he’s completed. Last, we talk about the lifelong mentors who continue to shape him as a person and a coach, and why his 2018 goals have nothing to do with the gym.

About Pete Hitzeman

Pete Hitzeman is an unlikely athlete. Raised in a household of engineers and musicians, he was introduced to athletic training only after joining his high school wrestling team on a whim. The ten years after graduation were filled with more cigarettes, pints, and cheeseburgers than he cares to remember, until he rediscovered mountain biking as an adult.

In the years since, he has steadily developed into a pan-athlete, flinging himself headlong into cycling, running, and CrossFit. Despite being physiologically ill-suited for any of those endeavors, he has competed in a variety of endurance events, including the marathon, 6-hour road bike time trials, and a 100-mile mountain bike race.

His pursuit of his own physical potential is far from over, but his greater desire is to inspire others to find theirs. He has become a race director, fitness media consultant, and a coach and mentor to the athletes around him. He believes that good coffee is the root of all genius, that there’s a bicycle out there for everyone, and that we are all born athletes.
