The U.S. women’s soccer team faced a tough opponent in Canada. Each was vying for a spot in the final round, and both were unbeaten. Regulation was not enough to determine a winner, as the game was tied 3-3 forcing an overtime period. Unfortunately, one team had to lose. The game was exciting one for the fans. Christine Sinclair performed a hat trick in regulation, but it wasn’t enough for the Canadians. Fortunately, the U.S. did just enough to earn a victory by winning 4-3 when Alex Morgan scored in stoppage time. The U.S. will face World Cup champion Japan for gold, as Japan reached the women’s Olympic soccer final by beating France 2-1 at Wembley Stadium.

Jenn Suhr of the United States ended Russian Yelena Isinbayeva’s chance at a third straight Olympic title by winning the gold in the pole vault on Monday. Suhr won after clearing 4.75 meters at her second attempt, and missed every attempt at 4.80. Yarisley Silva also cleared 4.75 on her second attempt for a Cuban national record, but lost on a count back and took silver. Isinbayeva finished with bronze at 4.70. She had been aiming to be the first woman in track and field to win the same individual event in three straight Olympics.

There were three Americans who advanced to the semifinal in the women’s 100-meter hurdle. LoLo Jones, Dawn Harper, and Kellie Wells will try to advance to the final round for a chance for a medal in the event. The finals for the 100-meter hurdles will be held on Tuesday. The U.S. will also send three to the 200-meter hurdle semifinals, as Sanya Richards-Ross, Carmelita Jeter, and Allyson Felix will also try to reach the medal stand.

The women’s beach volley ball event has two U.S. teams in the finals. Defending gold medalists Misty May Treanor and Kerry Walsh defeated Italy two sets to none to advance to the semi-finals, and Jennifer Kessey and April Ross also advanced to the semi-finals by defeating the Czech Republic 2 sets to none. Things could get interesting if both American teams advance and face each other for gold.

The U.S. Men’s basketball team will try to get back to form as they face a tough test in Argentina later this evening. The U.S. is still undefeated, but a tough game against Lithuania showed the rest of the field that they are not invincible.

China still has the overall medal lead, including golds with 64 and 31 respectively. The U.S. is still close behind with 63 total medals and 29 golds.
