CrossFit Games season is upon us. Between February 22 and July 15 the long process of selecting the “Fittest Man and Woman on Earth” will take place beginning with the CrossFit Games Open, continuing in the Regionals, and culminating at the Home Depot Center in Southern California on July 13-15.
The first stage of the CrossFit Games, the Open, begins on February 22. One of the unique qualities of the CrossFit Games is that it is open for all athletes of all levels to participate in this first stage. All you have to do is register online and perform the weekly workout. Workouts are posted five weeks in a row on the CrossFit Games website. They can be performed at an official CrossFit affiliate or you can submit a video to the website. With nearly 3,400 CrossFit affiliates existing around the world and more people training on their own, the competition will be deep. Last year over 26,000 people participated in the Open.
Whether you participate in the Open or not, you can watch the results go up on the official leaderboard on the CrossFit Games website. For those participating it is a great way to see where you rank beyond your affiliate gym.
When the Open comes to a close on March 25 the top 60 athletes from each region will be granted a slot in the Regionals. There are seventeen separate regional competitions, each lasting three days. They all take place between April 27 and May 27. The workouts are the same at each regional event.
From each region only the top three men and top three women will be invited to the CrossFit Games. The Games will be held in Carson, California at the Home Depot Center. Last year over 17,000 people attended the event which was also broadcast on ESPN. The top man and top woman will not only be dubbed “Fittest on Earth,” but will also be awarded $250,000 each.
As in previous years, in addition to the individual competition there are also Team and Masters divisions in the CrossFit Games. For the first time this year affiliates will be allowed to enter more than one team into the competition. The Masters divisions are divided into 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, and 60+ age groups.
