The U.S. women gymnastics team won their first gold since 1996. This team has been nicknamed “The Fab Five” and they lived up to the hype by beating Russia in convincing fashion, outscoring them by more than five points. Romania won bronze in the event.

The U.S. women gymnastics team won their first gold since 1996. This team has been nicknamed “The Fab Five” and they lived up to the hype by beating Russia in convincing fashion, outscoring them by more than five points. Romania won bronze in the event.
Allison Schmitt of the U.S. set an Olympic record to win the 200-meter freestyle. She came in with a time of 1:53.61, which was more than a second better than the previous record set by Italy’s Frederica Pellegrini. Camille Muffat of France notched the silver medal, while Bronte Barrat of Australia finished with the bronze.
Michael Phelps won his record-tying eighteenth medal when he earned the silver in the 200-meter butterfly. He tied Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina for the career leader in medals.
Phelps then set a new record when the U.S. convincingly won the gold in the Men’s 4×200-meter Freestyle Relay. The team, consiting of Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer, Ricky Berens, and Phelps on the anchor leg, won in 6:59.70. France took the silver in 7:02.77, while China was third in 7:06.30.
Phelps now is officially the winningest Olympian of all time with 19 medals – 15 of those being gold.
The U.S. women’s soccer team is off to a hot start, clinching their group with a 1-0 win over North Korea. Abby Wambach scored the winning goal, which was her 141st goal in international play.
In men’s tennis, Andy Roddick was defeated by Novak Djokovic from Serbia by a score of 6-2, 6-1. “I hit the ball fine,” Roddick said. “He was just too good from the baseline. He was seeing it like a basketball.” Venus Williams, however, continues to advance as she will be entering the third round after her defeat of Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada 6-1, 6-3.
The U.S. women’s basketball team defeated Angola in convincing fashion by a score of 90-38. The women are now 2-0 in pool play, and a major favorite to win the gold. The men continue play tonight against Tunisia.
The United States has rallied and tied China with the total medal count with 23. China still has a lead in gold medals with 13, but the U.S. is close behind with 9.
