Change Starts With Choice
I want to talk about choice, and what that means not only for your fitness and your body, but for your life.
Let’s start with the hard truth that your body, right now, is a result of past choices you’ve made. If that sounds too abstract, let me give you an example: Suppose you have tight hips. That may be a result of past choices you’ve made to engage in repetitive, sagittal-plane stuff like running, squatting, deadlifting, cycling and sitting that have lead to hips that function reasonably well in flexion and extension, but not well in other ways.
As true as this is for our bodies, it’s equally true for virtually all areas of our lives.
Are you happy with your emotional state, your relationships, your habitat? All of these situations are the result of past choices you’ve made.
This is a lot of responsibility, and it can be scary to realize it is all on us. But it’s also empowering. If you aren’t happy with the way things are, you can choose to make a change, and that choice will be reflected in the future. We tend to get stuck living on autopilot, doing things by default, by compulsion, or because we saw our favorite guru on Instagram do it. But those are all someone else’s choices. Instead of following other people’s choices, try choosing what is most important to you.
This should make things a lot simpler. For example, I like to walk in the woods. I find there are many benefits that are important to me. But that’s me. Maybe you want to get in the weight room, bulk up, and get swole. If so, that’s awesome—as long as it is a conscious choice you are making that will lead you to a future you really want.
Change starts with choice. If you are not happy with something in your life, it’s time to make that choice. I have more to talk about on this topic in the video below so, let's dig in.
When your goals are clear, the choices make themselves:
