Oatmega Bars (Product Review)

Oatmega is the best tasting bar I’ve ever had. It’s also a company committed to a greater good.

Oatmega founder, Trevor Ross, created the company in 2007 after the passing of his sister from breast cancer. Her death motivated him to find a healthier way of living and to encourage others to do the same. Being an engineer at heart, Ross decided to create the best snack bar he could, and as a result Oatmega was born.

About the Product

The Oatmega website is pretty spare, but that’s fine, because their products speak for themselves. Oatmega bars are:

  • Gluten free
  • Soy free
  • Non-GMO
  • Made with grass-fed whey protein from New Zealand
  • A source of omega-3s

Each bar comes in at 190 calories. The whey protein comes from a grass-fed source and most of the ingredients are organic. The omega-3s come from “responsibly caught deep ocean fish oil” in the form of anchovies, sardines, and tilapia. Each bar contains seven grams of fiber and only five grams of sugar.

Oatmega bars are available in five flavours. All of them have a nice crunch and a solid base that isn’t too dry or too squishy. They held up well to being piled up for a while before I got around to trying them.

  • Wild Blueberry Crisp – This is my least favorite flavour, but only because I can’t stand blueberries. But if I had to eat something blueberry, it might be this. The berry scent is intense, but the experience is that of real blueberries, not “blueberry flavour.”
  • Brownie Crisp – This tastes a bit like chocolate breakfast oatmeal. It has nice rounded flavors, but not sweet. Tastes more like cocoa than chocolate and is slightly malty.
  • Chocolate Peanut Crisp – A combination of organic peanut butter and organic peanut butter blended into a bar. What’s amazing is this bar doesn’t taste so much like peanut butter, as it tastes like real peanuts. The chocolate flavour is mild and not too sweet. The duo makes for a nice savory flavour blend.
  • Chocolate Mint Crisp – Tastes reminiscent of a Thin Mint Girl Scout cookie. Again, not too sweet, light and pleasant mint flavour, nice crunch.
  • Vanilla Almond Crisp – This one is sweeter than all the other flavours. It tastes much like a white chocolate candy bar. It’s a nice flavour, but definitely sweeter and will feel more like a treat or a dessert, which has it’s ups and downs.

Giving Back

For every case sold, Oatmega gives a bar to a food bank local to the area where the case was sold. They also work with a food bank local to them in Austin, volunteering on a monthly basis. So if you’re wondering why their URL is “Givebar.com,” that’s the answer. They’re clearly committed to both the concept and the act of giving back.

My Recommendation

I’ve eaten a lot of snack bars, protein bars, energy bars, and meal replacement bars over the years. More than I should have, and certainly more than I should admit to. Oatmega is, without a doubt, the best tasting bar I’ve ever had. And on top of that, they are a company committed to a greater good. So, for a little over £2.00 per bar, you can have something healthy and beneficial, for you and for your community.
