Sally’s MMA Holiday Wish List

The holidays will be here before you know it and now is the time to go online and check out the coolest gear and accessories available for that mixed martial arts fighter in your life. In my opinion, these are the must-have items.

1. Damage Control Mouthguards – $29.99-249.00

These are by far the coolest boil & bite and custom-fit mouth guards I’ve seen on the market. Jon Jones, Clay Guida, and Carlos Condit have called on Damage Control to protect their smiles. MMA fighter Delano Romero and his wife, Albuquerque dentist Vesna Delic, worked with James McElhanon, an organic chemist at Sandia National Laboratories, to develop the most shock-absorbing, streamlined mouthguards possible for athletes in contact sports. All of their mouth guards are made of Polyshok™ and are available in standard and custom designs. Mention this article when you place your order and receive a 25% discount on all mouthguards.

2. The Collision Sports Custom Weight Cut Plan – $150.00-275.00

This is no diet-in-a-box, but rather a blueprint designed for each fighter individually. Many of the Canada’s best fighters have had success on this plan and dropped over 30lbs in a few weeks safely and effectively with full recovery in time to go to war. If you want to cut unnecessary weight while preserving muscle and keeping energy levels high to train your hardest, this plan is what you need. Leave the hours in the sauna for your opponents. Contact Certified Sports Nutritionist Ricky Goodall to find out more about a weight cut or general nutrition plan. He offers online planning worldwide and if you mention this article, you will receive a discount of $50 until December 31, 2012.

3. Fairtex Muay Thai Boxing Gloves – $65.95

fairtex gloves, fairtex sparring gloves, sparring gloves, boxing glovesHandmade in Thailand, these have an evenly-distributed foam core to protect the entire hand. The 16oz Fairtex gloves I recently bought are the smallest I’ve seen and the wrap-around wrist closure offers sturdy support. Fairtex is known worldwide for providing quality leather boxing gloves that protect both a fighter and his partner in sparring. I ordered my gloves from Muay Thai Fighting and received them direct from Thailand in two days.

3. Fairtex MMA Sparring Gloves – $54.95

fairtex gloves, mma gloves, mma sparring gloves, small mma glovesThese gloves are designed to have the protection of a 16oz boxing glove while leaving your hands open to grapple in MMA sparring. They allow fighters to build speed and power at the same time. I have a pair of these gloves and although they are a little bulky while grappling, they are superior to other MMA sparring gloves in regards to quality and style. The wrap-around wrist closure offers sturdy support but the style can easily accommodate wraps.

4. Top Ten Headguard – $146.16

top ten headgear, muay thai headgear, boxing headgearThis gear is made of super-shock-absorbent Bayflex and was the official headguard of the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, and the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Top Ten is the sharpest, most streamlined looking headgear I’ve seen at my gym and although I haven’t tried it, it is definitely on my wish list. It offers unrestricted visibility, breathing, and hearing and the special adjustable design is claimed to prevent the headguard from slipping around on the head.

5. Clinch Gear Elite Series Performance MMA Shorts – $39.95

I asked the guys at my MMA gym which were their favorite grappling shorts and Clinch Gear came out on top. They are made of a two-way stretch polyester microfiber and feature a fully sublimated expansion panel up the side of each leg and laterally across the rear for maximum flexibility and performance. An extended expansion panel extends vertically along the entire length of each inseam.

6. Scramble Shadows Rashguard – $59.95

scramble shadow rashguard, frank miller rashguard, sin city rashguardFrank Miller’s Sin City was the inspiration for this piece of clothing. Artist Bong Abad of Gawakoto Clothing “tried to emulate Mr. Miller’s use of light and shadows (thus, the name, although Matt Benyon of Scramble named it as such).” The material is strong and flexible, allowing unrestricted movement while keeping moisture away from the skin. This is definitely one of the sickest rash guards I’ve seen in the gym.

7. lululemon Reverse Groove Short – $48.00

lululemon shorts, girls bjj shorts, girls grappling shorts, women's shortsFor the ladies, lululemon offers the stylish and figure-flattering Reverse Groove Short. Lululemon listens to women when it comes to designing training gear. The wide waistband is snug enough to stay in place but doesn’t cut in to create the “muffin top” look. Also, the cut of the crotch prevents the dreaded camel toe. They are shorts for all sports made of luon, lululemon’s signature four-way stretch and moisture wicking fabric. I have several pairs of these shorts and they are by far my favorite.

8. Nike Pro-Core Tight Long-Sleeve iD Women’s Top – $49.00

nike pro core long sleeve, nike pro corePersonalize your Christmas gift this year with Nike Pro-Core Tight Long Sleeve iD. Nike training top’s four-way-stretch Dri-FIT fabric rivals Under Armour for comfort and durability. The cut is fitted but more forgiving and less transparent than compression heat gear. The front, back and sleeve can be custom-designed to suit any athlete. What’s more awesome than receiving a rash guard made just for you? Order by December 7 to receive your order before December 24.

9. Bas Rutten’s Body Action System – $179.99-429.99

bas rutten, body action system, bas rutten body action systemTake your training to the next level with Bas Rutten’s Body Action System. This piece of equipment allows fighters to do pad work at home when they aren’t able to work with a partner. The stand is fully customizable with a head pad, torso pad and focus pads to work punches (including uppercuts!), kicks, elbows and knees. The stand is also collapsible for easy storage. The Body Acton System beats the punching bag hands down and comes with 2 DVDs with programs for athletes from beginner to advanced.

Ordering gear online can be hit or miss and it’s especially tricky buying for someone else. I hope this guide helps to ease some of the holiday stress and your loved ones enjoy their new training products! Happy Holidays!

About Sally Arsenault

Sally Arsenault was not an athlete growing up and did not begin fitness training until she was 26 years old. Her first love was weight lifting, but after being robbed at gunpoint twice, she decided to learn self-defense to take back a sense of control over her own safety.

After trying muay Thai, MMA, and BJJ, she decided to focus on BJJ as it is a leverage-based martial art that was developed for small people, like her, to defeat larger attackers.

Now Sally is a BJJ brown belt under Kevin Taylor at Renzo Gracie Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada. She founded a women's only program with hopes of introducing other women to the sport she loves.

BJJ is Sally’s passion and she is constantly researching training methods, techniques, supplements, nutrition, new training gear, and following leaders in the sport to learn their strategies to become a better athlete and competitor.
